2006 Prius blk ext. gray int. 295k miles New refurbished HV battery with 3 yr/36k mi warranty New accessories battery Exterior is fair condition with visible dents and scratches Interior is fair/good condition Everything works minus touchscreen Asking $2500 OBO Car died while I was driving home. Brought it to my mechanic and was diagnosed with both batteries needing replacement. Had both replaced but was also told needs transaxle. Didn't want to spend more money on it so its up for sale as is. I have the diagnosis with receipt for the work, parts, and warranty. The HV battery is currently not connected to the car as I was told it might get drained if it's plugged in without a working transaxle to recharge battery. I'll post pics if I can. Located in SoCal. Will part out if I can't get any interest for entire car. Pm or email [email protected] for questions
I just had a Prius in my shop with a misdiagnosed transaxle within days of having batteries put in. I found that the previous mechanic forgot to tighten some nuts on HV battery. This created errors that mimicked a bad transaxle. Once hooked up correctly, the "transaxle" error was cleared. I'd be interested in seeing the report.
if the car died while you were driving, then it probably wasn't your HV battery that failed. HV battery failure will put the car into limp mode, but won't kill it while driving.
Actually, not much of a report. Just stated I brought it in claiming the car just died. Recommend replace both batteries. I'll try n post a copy of the report
It would be great if that was the case, but I don't have a much technical skill to deal with this or more importantly spend more money having someone diagnose it, unless it's for the cheap. I'm already down $2150.00 and still with a non working car. If anyone wants to volunteer to help me out, I'm willing but I was being asked for another $1500 for new transaxle and I just didn't feel that was worth it. If someone with more knowledge helps me out n gets it back running, we can work something out financially but not anywhere near $1500.
If there is a short in HV wire it can kill car. It can make it unable to go Ready or into D or R. They should recheck the HV battery installation. In my customers case the loose connections shorted the HV cable insulation to the frame. Was easily diagnosed by checking with a megohmeter. Replaced cables and car runs fine. Not transaxle problem. Although seemed to present that way. Need error codes If you call me I can help.
@Rbprius2 , first thing I think when reading your title: the car's in need of a rear axle, due to a collision or whatever. It's possible as original poster to edit your title, say to "transaxle".
Local mechanic in Pomona that I've been going for like 20 yrs. This is not a case of a mechanic trying to scam me. If anything, possibly a bad diagnosis. $2150 is for new accessories battery and refurbished HV battery with warranty and labor.
Too bad you're in Wisconsin? The mechanic installed the refurbished HV battery and operated the car, but lost all its power due to not being recharged by transaxle, according to them. They had it recharged but they didn't want to install again without having to fix transaxle for fear it would lose power again. I chose not to pay for transaxle so I just asked hem not to install battery so I could save the battery form losing charge and possibly sell separate.
The problem with a refurbished battery is when it's not done right.......it won't work. So the mechanic can't really tell you about his lack of expertise in doing the repair.....therefore he suggests the problem is somewhere else now. It isn't cool for you because you trust this mechanic and you probably won't ask for your money back. If the failure was diagnosed incorrectly, I don't think you should pay for the repair on the incorrectly diagnosed item.
Yes, I'm stuck with it now because, to be fair, they told me prior to fixing the battery that it might be something else in addition to the battery so they did not guarantee the battery was the only problem other than they diagnosed both batteries being bad. I just took a leap of faith hoping replacing the batteries would fix it.
Did the car start after you install the refurbished battery? I'm wondering if your mechanic locked in the orange service plug properly on the battery? If that isn't locked into place and he's not familiar with it, the car won't start.
I have no way of knowing what if anything mechanical, electrical, and or technical was done to diagnos the car. According to them, yes it started but
well by the sounds of things, it might look like your have a transaxle problem. With 295k miles on the car, I would not be surprised. It's a lot of miles!!! Anyway to get back money on the refurbished battery? Sounds like a good candidate to part out.......I could use some black body parts for my 2005 LOL
Yes, the mileage also contributed on my decision not to invest any more money into the car, hence the FS ad. I'm hoping someone with knowledge, technical skills, time, and tools will see this as an opportunity. Also, Like I stated earlier I'm open to parting out if anyone is interested
I'll send you a PM to discuss. Not many people are out there looking for a 295k miles vehicle with a failed battery and transaxle. It's a part out project now.
It is very unlikely for battery AND transaxle to fail at the same time. I could help talk through the situation. If the battery did not fix the problem the mechanic may be able to return it. Seriously, at least give me would minutes to discuss with you or your mechanic. Trying to understand how we got to this point. Toyota error codes are very specific. Not many cases I can think of where you need to throw a battery at the problem if a transaxle code was present. And the likelihood of a new transaxle error showing up after a battery install would be out of the ordinary. Could be an install misstep, or a an issue with the replacement Hybrid Battery itself. I'll look up some California geography and see if you are by other Hybrid mechanics.
I don't know how this diagnostic can be accurate, stating both batteries have no charge. Even a weak failed battery has a charge. What kind of bogus diagnostic was that? A failed pack would still electrocute you with a bad module....I would question that mechanic SM-N900P ?
