Daniel, I beg to differ. They DO NOT have taxes withheld from their paycheck. They DO NOT have a social security number. Which means they ARE NOT in the Federal Tax ID system. They DO NOT get a paycheck - they get cash.

Sorry Daniel, you may like supporting and paying for these things, but I don't.

Nope, I read it several times, and then a couple more times after your post...

I couldn't imagine anyone comparing tihs kind of thing to slavery. The only portion that would be comparible would be the lake of cheap labor if the immigration left. But it would only hurt those businesses which hired them against the law in the first place.

Send them home....do it the right way....pay the fees.....learn the language....and prove yourself.

While some workers get paid cash and thereby avoid paying taxes (this applies to both citizens and immigrants: plenty of citizens work in the grey market where they receive cash and pay no taxes!) the big employers (e.g. hotels, agriculture, etc.) require a number. While the IRS may have cracked down after 2001, formerly you could get a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) even if you were undocumented. In any case, the big employers require a number before they'll hire anybody, and people who don't have one often make one up. The taxes get withheld and they cannot get refunds.

The grey market where people work for cash and pay no taxes is not an immigration issue because both immigrants and non-immigrants participate, and both risk arrest and jail when they do so. And by and large, it's very small employers or individuals hiring someone for a day who pay cash.

Actually there is a good point in here.

Where do the taxes go when an illegal uses a fake social security number ?

Sweet windfall ! Do the feds just keep it ? Does it go to Haliburton ?

The IRS keeps it and it goes to the feds, who give it to Halliburton in the form of a no-bid contract.

Bummer. Maybe I can get a resume into Haliburton and have them pay me on my own no-bid contract.
