High security nation? I wish it were true, Mendel. I've had a package stolen off the porch in the past. (That's a fairly common crime that's on the news occasionally.) I'm not sure if the plates would fit thru the small mail slot in the door. It would be much easier to just pick them up at the dealer, as one forum member mentioned. My dealer doesn't do that. So, in the meantime, I remain anonymous... (Edit: I did receive the Vehicle Registration in quick order. Only 10 days from purchase. We call it the "Pink Slip" here in the US. It shows the plate number on it... so I already know the license plate number in case I need to report them stolen.)
I remove the plate frames, and also remove their decals of painted surface. I once had a dealer take MY plate frame off while in the shop, and replace with their dealer frame. The nerve
That might just be California. In Oregon you go to the DMV and are issued a plate immediately. U.S. currency is green, lacking other colors. I'd say Canadian currency looks more like Monopoly money.
Funny you should mention these, i never gave them a second look till i got pulled over and handed a ticket in NYS for obstruction of plate.... No I'm not kidding, according to NYS DMV a license plat frame is obstruction of the plate. I have made sure to remove all Dealer info on everything after that.
First thing I do when buying a vehicle: strip off all dealer stickers and license plate ring. I just signed my soul on the dotted line I don't do free advertisement. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
"That's no mistake!" said Captain Obvious. Played nearly the same, one difference is the "Get Out of Jail Free" cards--collected by power, as compared to chance. Oy. I digress. My Prius had no plate frames when I bought it, but it does have a dealer decal. It's not big, and if it's crooked, it's only off by a gnat's nice person. Judging by some other posts in this thread, others haven't been as lucky.
By the way in many many states license plate frames are simply illegal dealer adverts or otherwise (cops sometime give tickets for it when nothing else amiss).
As I said earlier !!! Practically ANY license plate frame is illegal. New York is not unique in this ... problem is that Police can "interpret" obstruction at the scene... basically any part of the license plate is covered (as opposed to the license plate number). The NYS law as adopted to fight those red-light camera cheeters (with special coating, prizm like plastic covers, and those top and side blocking "shades" which fools the camera) but as usual cops started misusing it. Similar to tinted windows. These tickets usually dropped if this is the only ticket you got.
Those guys putting "clear" coverings tick me; they're obviously trying to avoid tolls or whatever. Up here for sometime there was a subset that wash their vehicle, but leave the plate filthy in the hopes of it being unreadable, even goofier. Then there's a legal subset: all those that got special plates during the 2010 Winter Olympics: the plate has relatively dark/blotchy printed background scene, and black numbers/letters. It's near illegible at a quick glance. Typical plate: Olympic plate:
AutoNation has great plastic license plate frames. Simply flip them over and the advertising is then hidden and the back side actually has retention tabs for the plates. I prefer using them so that there are no metal license plates touching the car paint. They also do not obscure any of the license plate.
