Ok, yeah, it has a lot of miles, but hey it was in my price range and I wanted to finally buy a vehicle less than a decade old. It was a company car used by a health company to shuttle supplies, so that's where the miles came from. The Carfax is clean and the car drives quiet and smooth up to freeway speeds.

The engine idles smooth but I figure I'll go ahead and replace the spark plugs just as general maintenance, and I'll check the 12V and replace that if it looks old or isn't holding voltage right. Looks like the original HV battery as well, so I'll be ready to replace that if it starts showing signs of failing. I know with that many miles anything could start failing, but are there any other specific things I should watch for?

Thanks and looking forward to joining the Prius gang!

    congrats and welcome,

many here consider miles to be less taxing than years, so hopefully, your ownership run will be fairly event free. do you have maintenance history? if not, you may want to consider catching up on all the proscribed maintenance in the book, especially the stuff over 100k like fluids, plugs, etc.

    all the best!(y)

    Thanks!

And yeah I liked the idea of just having something newer despite the miles. There wasn't any maintenance history that I saw but there were some papers besides the manual in the glove compartment that I didn't go through. As soon as I get it home I'll give all that a check and I'll definitely catch up on any of that suggested maintenance that I don't have proof of.

you can register the vin at the toyota owners website, and there should be a record of any dealer service.

That's a pretty cool feature, thanks!.
Apparently someone put diesel in it in 2013, dealer tore down the engine, cleaned everything, and put new injectors and plugs in, so at least those are newer :p
And the 12v got replaced last January, I'll still check it but at least it should be good for a while.

Check that all recalls have been performed as well.

That's good to hear, because I plan to drive my car into the ground for the next 10-12 years...I've only had mine for less than 6 months and have already reached 10K Miles  Mostly long highway miles, I figure it won't tax the battery as much...hopefully it'll last till well over 200K miles before I start looking at a potentially Prius Gen 6 :D

I just bought a 2012 V, 59k miles.. I wouldn't have hesitated buying one with even more miles. Everything I've read about this car is reliability, reliability, reliability...

Thinking i'll be able to get 10 years out of this thing.. Mine was a Toyota Lease return. I've seen all the service records. Good times!

I believe too they can reach 200k miles without much issue, prius are pretty solid.

One of the Taxi drivers in my area told me he put 450,000kms on his last Camry Hybrid. He said he went 200k on one set of brakes. All he replaced was the water pump 2x, a strut and tires. That's nutty. especially with the crappy winters we have around here. he then went on to mention about how my car would go for a long time.. He mentioned that wheel bearings were the only big issue he'd seen in the other cabs.

I've heard quite a few stories of taxis lasting well past 200k miles, which is encouraging since I drive a lot of city with some highway interspersed so I figure my wear pattern is similar to a taxi, just over a longer time span :p

I think I'll definitely be looking into preemptively replacing my wheel bearings/hubs and both coolant pumps before they start failing, sounds like those are the main problem areas with higher mileage Prii.

there can be the occasional expensive repair outside of warranty. for those that it happens to, it's a bummer. but overall reliability is excellent on average, and that's all you can ask for.
