I will start at the top/ Again this is my wife's DD and I drive it on the random daily or out of town trips. We just got back from a 600+ mile trip this weekend, and drove the whole time. So here is my assessment so far.
    1. The gen 3 issue was my wife's problem not mine. I liked the gen 3 but My attitude is happy wife=happy life!
    2. Comparing the Gen 4 with the Gen 2:
The Gen 4 ride is much smoother. Bumps and dips are barely noticeable.
The first thing I noticed in the Gen 4 was the lack of body roll giving the ride a much more sporty feel. The steering is more responsive.
I really like the HUD, it helps keep your eyes on the road once you get accustomed to it.
    3. Gen 4 vs. Mazda 3:
    Same as above↑
The ride of the Mazda is rougher, even with high end Michelin tires. The gen 4 Prius rides like a Cadillac comparatively.
The Mazda was billed at 39-40 mpg, and we never saw that even on extended trips. The best we got was around 31 mpg.

Body roll is almost non-existant in Gen 4

Mazda 3 steering might be the best ever

The Mazda is rough on bad roads

Mazda never met expectations. 600 mile Hwy in Gen4 gave us 57mpg

Mazda dash is just weird, I never got used to it.

Mazda Navigation was Tom Tom with expensive updates

Mazda leather was slick and pulls apart at seams, carpet was weak.

Im 6'3" and can sit in the back of Prius, no way in Mazda

Might be 1.5X the storage in the Hatch of the Prius vs. the Mazda

Mazda has a real spare tire. I know this a weight thing in Gen 4.

Ill add more as I think of it.

Given that approach, I concede that I should of precisely said "Your Wife and You " couldn't be happy with the Gen 3 Prius.
I certainly would not criticize that approach to harmonious partnership.

When your woman is happy, life is better:)

The mileage thing always used to baffle me. I look at Fuelly and see Corollas from 2004 onward achieving 20 - 33 mpg average. My 2004 Corolla S with a stick, 38 mpg all the time on my highway commute, year round. More spirited driving locally might bring my tank down to 34/35.

But looking at how others drive, they lose a lot of mileage roaring up to stop signs and lights, and accelerating midway to the next one. More like golf cart driving, ON/OFF BRAKE!!!!

My niece's Mazda 3 from a few years ago, I drove it around back roads, interstate, very spirited driving. A very busy four days, using a full tank. My spirited average for that time was 35 mpg. But I use a cars momentum, and generally coast at lights and anticipate, not gunning it when there's nowhere to go. But as spirited as I used to drive, I was always in the upper 10% on the mileage lists, and never got anywhere in last place;)

Now this winter my schedule didn't allow for poking along, and my v rewarded me negatively for it. I have a neighbor that could care less, and their Prius Gen 3 they average 42 mpg. Good enough they say.

Our trip this weekend was from Ft Worth to San Antonio for a continuing ed course for my wife's Physical Therapy license. While she was in class I drove all over the place. If you didn't read into it above...I am very impressed.
