Has anyone in Canada got a 2016 Prius and if so what model did you get I am in south western Ontario and am being told that to the tech or the touring models I would have to go to Montreal , Toronto, or Vancouver areas other wise all they can get is the base with the upgrade package. Thanks Brian
I'm not sure what Toyota was thinking when I read that on their site as I priced one up. I'm in Newfoundland and not even close to a place where I could get one. I was looking at the touring.
??? Sorry I don't understand. Can you not just order one to your liking and wait to be delivered? It might take some time, side, 2-3 months, but then you have it exactly as you wish. Is it not possible to have cars built to order there?
Any dealer wanting the business can swap a car with another dealer in the three cites that can get the tech or touring package. I was told by two dealers (well, salesmen) that they can do that. Some might want to charge for extra shipping when doing that, but I was not charged extra when I bought Pearl S, which came from Courtney Toyota. I suspect there is a lot of room in the shipping charges to allow for this kind of thing. And no, you can't order what you want and wait for it. I -suspect- there is limited availability for Toyota Canada to import those two models - a "quota system" perhaps. Of course the dealers swapping would make that mostly a "moot point". Perhaps this limitation will end in a few months. I'm pretty sure if you wave money at the dealer you will get what you want, eventually.
Apparently not according to a local dealer all they can order is base/base with upgrade. Another local dealer is looking to see if they can get one from a dealer but it sounds like they are very hard to come by
Is Toyota the importer? We have a similar situation in Australia with Suzuki (and some other brands in the past), where different importers looked after different states. There were slight variations in product, but in some cases appreciable variations to pricing. But if Toyota is the importer in both cases, it's hard to understand.
That is correct. You can only get the Tech or Touring models (both with Li-Ion batteries) in the 3 metropolitan areas you've mentioned. You'll have to do a dealer swap or purchase from the Toronto area (not even sure how far out the dealers will be able to order the Tech or Touring). At least SW ON is a bit closer to Toronto and (theoretically) you could just drive up to a GTA dealer and do the deal there. Someone in the maritimes or prairies will face either a larger shipping cost or an unwilling dealer (to swap cars). There are certain logistics that led to this decision. Usually, yes. That's how it works in Canada. However, for the Gen 4 Prius (and specifically just the Gen 4), Toyota Canada is only selling the Technology, Technology w/ Advanced package and Touring models (all with Li-Ion batteries) in the 3 major metro areas - Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. All dealers are able to order the base or base w/ Upgrade package (NiMH battery). See the bottom right disclaimer and Yes. Toyota Canada Inc. is the sole distributor for Toyota vehicles in Canada.
It's more complicated than the Toyota advertising implies. Toyota is allowing Toronto area dealers to order the Touring and Technology models. I'm not sure how big the Toronto area is but it does include Newmarket and Brampton but not Orangeville. Thankfully our local dealer is working with another dealer so I was able to order a Technology with the advanced package.
That all sounds like quite a different way to order and buy cars you have there in Canada. In EU, you have a list of base trims, options, you go to the dealer, which might or might not at all have what you want, and then you order what you want *exactly* and then you wait x number of weeks/months and you get it how you want it. Delivery costs are more or less the same in the same country (e.g. Germany), around 800€ for the Prius (including registration, taxes, license plate). To my knowledge no dealer swaps anything with any other dealer.
That's basically how it normally works here too. I'm guessing that the supply of Touring and Technology trim levels is constrained so they are trying to control demand. I'm assuming that this restriction will go away in the future.
Similar in Canada but dealer trades are allowed (It is a big country after all!). Usually they try to trade with nearby dealers to save on shipping costs or to piggyback on another transfer/trade. They'll try to find a local car with your specifications first to minimise waiting time. If not, then they'll check on the computer to see what is coming in (either on the boat or on the production line). If there is a car that matches your specifications, they'll reserve it. If it's not coming to the dealer, then they'll check to see if someone else has reserved it or whether the dealer is willing to trade it for another car your dealer has. Lastly, if there isn't a car with your specifications, they'll factory order one.
