Sounds like you're using a pickup to do the job of a tractor :) If I were you, I'd worry more about the safety Nazis than slushboxes. Future vehicles are likely to do something like automatically put on the parking brake when you open the door, not to good for your use case.

That said, the slushbox might actually work better as there's no danger of stalling the engine on uneven terrain.

I saw prius haters at least weekly when I had my prius. Even my spouse noticed them when driving my prius. I may be wrong but mostly pick up truck drivers were real jerks when they saw a prius in front of them no matter how fast you were driving and how closely you were following the cars in front of you. I always had power mode on and it made prius pretty fast when accelerating/merging. After all, I always smiled at them when I pass them all through the car pool lane! :)

    Merged.

Oh what's crazy is since I started driving rav4 hybrid, I haven't seen them much so I believe prius haters do really exist.

This thread has me considering putting a boatail on my Prius.

Not just for improved aerodynamics, but some social engineering.

    One that looks like this

Bwahahahahaha!! That's the infamous "Ford Pinto", is it not? Allegedly designed with a notorious predilection for exploding in an inglorious fireball if rear-ended in an accident :)

how is it a problem again? i didn't say i brake check people or do unsafe things.
sometimes there is one line and no passing zone.
sorry, i'm not going to sugar coat it. prius drivers trying to squeeze max MPG and stay in EV as long as they can ARE the problem.
    you know who you are.

Here is something you didn't think yourself. Prius has huge speedometer error. When it shows 70 you are doing closer to 65. So you're driving below the limit. But why would you care? You are not in a hurry.

Yes we do! At least, some of us for sure. And that's why I set my cruise control to 42mph in a 40mph limit area, and 53mph in a 50mph zone :)

well I mostly follow the traffic in front of me and keep up with it, still got tailgated and passed with no reason. I always wanted to ask from them, ok there's a car right in front of me which the trucks could usually see it over me, and why are you tailgating me or do you want me drive over the cars in front of me? lol :)

i drive the speed limit, not the speedometer. yes, i know it's off and compensate for that. it's easy enough to check it at radar speed signs. but you're right, i'm not in a hurry. i wish everyone had the luxury of being able to relax and smell the roses.

I'm totally with you on that, bisco :)

I spent 8.5 years prior to my Prius, whizzing around in a black Mazda MX-3 flying saucer. I really have had my fill of speeding for speeding's sake. And even then, I was still careful enough never to have fallen afoul of a speeding ticket. Yes, I was probably lucky too.

At my age, I've become very safety aware, so I'm not really into mixing it on the highway with boy racers - though I'm at pains not to present myself as a right pain in the posterior to other road traffic users by being obnoxiously (and obstinately) slow either.

I tend to keep up with the traffic when commuting, unless speed cams are keeping a beady lens or two on the traffic, then I do welcome a sedate and unhurried ride at the speed limit.

On an empty road, I'm liable to set the auto throttles to the speed limit and amble along in bliss and harmony. The disharmonious are welcome to overtake at the first available safe opportunity. I won't be pushed over the speed limit unless I personally desire to break the law.

On motorways - I'll own up! I'm the 'snail' doing 65mph in that 70mph limit zone. Yup! I'll tuck myself into the 'slow lane' and cruise along in near silence, enjoying the ride - and fuel savings. It's why I bought the vehicle in the first place. And no, I'm not a tree hugger, though I do respect this unique terrestrial ball.

There's 2 lanes for anyone who wants to go faster; indulge yourselves. Just leave me be. I leave enough time for my journey and neither my Prius 'Spaceship', nor myself, arrive at our destination stressed out or frazzled from 'rat race driving'. I avoid stress for medical reasons too!

So, yes! I'm a motorway snail. Not because my Prius is slow, but I thoroughly enjoy the performance of the HSD at this speed. The only minus is being a target for "crash for cash" scammers who might mark me down as a target, because they assume a "slow" driver has no confidence.

Wow, this topic gained more attention than I thought...(which I guess is not totally a good thing, but anyways)
I understand haters will remain the same no matter what we do, and I agree with most of you that if they want to risk their life/money, they can go ahead.
I am more toward safety driver side but that doesn't mean I drive slowly, just don't like to be treated differently (not in a good way) because most people think we are SLOW.

I'll put it this way: as long as you are in the right lanes - I don't care what speed you drive. If you are in the left lane, or carpool lane, or HOV lane - please respect other drivers and go with the flow of traffic. If this lane is moving too quickly for your comfort or law-abiding nature, please either move to the right lanes or at least move there temporarily to allow those behind you to pass. I enjoy driving safely and obeying the law, as well as saving gas and enjoying my HOV sticker. But if my driving is impeding traffic I will move to the slower lanes. That is the right thing to do, in my opinion. There is nothing worse then moving along in the HOV lane when a car merges in and moves way slower than the flow because "it's the law." Usually that car has an HOV sticker...

It just hit me...how Rodney Dangerfield is this thread title?

I use a truck as a tractor too! Manual gearbox with hand throttle, brush cutting deck hooked on the back. The ultimate cruise control! Much more relaxing than driving on the road...until the next giant rabbit hole.

"Prius Hate" isn't about the Prius.

    It's just hate.
I find it hilarious that I've got 95,000 miles on my G3 in the Deep South and I can count on one hand the number of times that I've encountered road rage of any kind.
I live where kids still put truck nutz on their hitches, and you have to order your ice tea UNsweetened rather than sweetened if that's how you prefer it, and people look at you funny if you try to order grits with your breakfast only because any proper breakfast WILL include grits whether it's on the menu or not.
I tried to order quinoa once, and I was interrogated politely but firmly about my lineage and place of birth.

The only time I've been coal-rolled was about a week after that sad story on CNN that made Prius drivers look worse than the coal rollers.
The would-be coal roller didn't count on the fact that a Prius can out accelerate a poorly tuned truck at least to 20MPH.

It's not a speed thing either, because about 50,000 miles ago the buzz-kills in the lawyer tank put a GPS/Cellular tracker on Goofy and now if I drive a few miles over the PSL, my bosses, bosses boss will get an automated email (it prevents people who brown-nose their first level from committing the horrible crime of driving PSL+5)

So.....for the last 50,000 miles I guarantee you that I haven't been hated on because I drive too slowly.

Perhaps......JUST perhaps it's a combination of the fact that I try to drive with courtesy (because of the phone # on 5 places in my car) and juuuuuust perhaps it's because I got rid of the chip on my shoulder when grew out of my 20s. ;)

    Prius Hate does exist.
On both sides of the windshield....

However (comma!!) like many other things, it's something that can only survive if more than one person plays.

    YMMV....

If you or a family member has someone that drives a lot for a living, you may realize a lot of people are just bad drivers. Between real jobs, I was a valet. Lots of male 25-something drivers. Go 20 or even 30 in the parking garage - occasionally joyriding luxury cars. People that are not likely to get anywhere in life. People that drive aggressively and angry. Losers.

First, my Prius has a much smaller speedometer error than that. When it says 70, I'm doing at least 68.

Second, commercial trucks are legally capped at 60 mph everywhere in my state. Some of them even obey that limit as a condition of continued employment, and I've yet heard no rational argument as to why I can't join them when I wish. Only bullies have demanded that I drive faster than those legal trucks.

Of those trucks that don't obey their 60 mph limit, the great majority are moving at 62-65. Of the very few moving 68+, nearly all are from out of state, not even from neighboring states.

When driving in Montana in the early evening, I find not just 2, but 4 different posted speed limits from which to choose. And the locals who choose a different limit just quietly pass without a fuss. They seem accustomed to the speed differences.

i'm all for staying to the right, but on a one lady road, i'm doing the speed limit, and there's a long line of cars behind me. let them petition their legislator for higher limits.

I spent nearly fifteen years carpooling, all before Prius. When an HOV lane extension covered much of our route, there was about a month of conflict between those who wanted to use it as a 'faster than fast' lane, and those who wanted to keep close to the speed limit. And transit buses that always obeyed the limit.

The transit buses never ever pulled over, they forced faster traffic to move to the real fast lane, the same leftmost general purpose lane that SOVs had to use. And when the buses were absent, those of us holding close to the limit greatly outnumbered the speedballs. Our critical mass won. For the remaining years of my carpooling, the speeders generally stayed in the SOV's fast lane, where they really belonged.

My need for carpooling ended in 2002, so I don't know how the local pattern has changed since.
