I can hardly believe Toyota messing up like this .
They will have to be very careful with pricing !
Hyunday said their Plug-in will get about 25 miles in EV-Mode and up to 57 mpg running in Hybrid-Mode .
Also they have a split battery of which one part lives in the spare tyre area and the other part of it is placed under the rear seats,so it sounds like there will be no compromise such as a missing 5. seat or loss of cargo space as in the new Prius Prime .
    What were they thinking ?
Don't get me wrong, all in all I think the Prime is quite ok,but the cargo area makes it look like an aftermarket Plug-in solution !

That's perfect !! A nice long stop (1/2 way?) on a 600 mile trip works just fine too. A Tesla super charger would be done WAY prior to your 1/2 way departure ... and you'd be good 'till your destination. On a 'quick pee 'break' ?? A super charger (for example) will get you an extra 50/60 miles during that 8 or 10 minute quickie .

Ok . . . . . I’ll bite . . . . we knew folks in the VERY remote ‘community’ called, “the yack”. Montana. 55 miles from nowhere. That’s 55 miles from the closest 120v (if not 240v) plug-in receptacle. You’re saying you go places that are farther away (to camp or vacation or whatever) from civilization than any other spot in the nation? Wow!! Congratulations!! Your alibi is truly way more valid than others ... continue on with that dino-burner !!
    ;)
You mean, 'alternate' reason? ... a reason other than Toyota making 1,000’s & 1,000’s of more sales with the Gen 1 PiP? That’s odd – that a manufacturer would piss away that kind of opportunity ... 1,000's more sales. It wasn't really because Toyota only sold Gen1 in CARB states? After all … now that PiP’s (with the introduction of the Gen II) will be sold nationwide … ALL the Toyota dealers will have to have service for them … old and new alike … if in fact that’s Toyota’s actual rational.

There's nothing odd about it. Pissing away tax-credits to promote a older generation simply makes no sense.

Don't you remember Prius history? How times did we have to deal with outdated & obsolete information? Intentionally contributing to that while at the same time using up a finite amount of subsidy opportunity would have been bad business. Thankfully, the long-term gain wasn't squandered away by giving in to pressure of the day. Toyota waited.

Careful. That logic applies to the Prime, too. PHEVs are a stopgap. Why 'piss away' a 'finite amount of subsidy opportunity' on today's stopgap if yesterday's stopgap wasn't worth those dollars?

Yep, that's the point. If you are one of the 50%+ of U.S. commuters for whom the Prius Prime will use less gas than other PHEVs and that is important to you, it would be an important consideration for purchasing the vehicle.

22 puts me over the top for 99% of my driving. it would change my ev/hv ratio from 2:1 to 4 or 5:1, but i have some concerns about the new pip.

IMO, Toyota states 22 mile ev until final epa calculation..The Toyota website says "more than 60 km" JC08 for the PiPP which would put it at 25 miles, using 4.4kwh/26.4 km for 11 miles. Google Translate

You're not helping yourself here. I was responding to an argument made by John. As I mentioned before, I own two Priuses. I also have a PHEV on order. I'm not 'the Tesla community,' whatever that means in this context. It's a fact that PHEVs are a stopgap on the way to a future with all-electric consumer vehicles. The tech/cost curve is undeniable-in a decade BEVs will perform better and cost less than ICE vehicles, no subsidies needed. If you disagree with that, or with the assertion that the logic john applied to the old PIP doesn't apply to the new PIP, feel free to provide your own argument.

When you instead focus on ad hominem attacks, you make yourself look foolish.

i was thinking, if the batteries are more efficient than 4 years ago, and the prius is more efficient than 6 years ago, and they doubled the kWh, shouldn't it go more than twice as far?

actually, weren't you the one who said he was going to stop derailing the thread? i'm not attacking you, i just think it's funny how toyota can't do anything without other fanboys (not you in particular) feeling the need to demonstrate why 'their' car is better.
maybe it's the same way over at teslachat, but i don't visit there. i apologize if i offended you, that was not my intent.

Indeed I was, until someone pointed out that my need to recuse was misplaced. Toyota gets a lot of flak because they're in front.

No, but I go places where there are no superchargers along the way, and I have to get back too. 400 miles round trip, sometimes in the winter with the heat going, sometimes getting stuck on the highway because of an accident. Because of emergencies, I always refuel once I have less than 250 miles of range remaining. That means I can't go anywhere in a 250 mile range car, but even without that, would you go 200 miles from home along a route with no superchargers?

Yes, but remember that the old PHEV was rated as 11 blended EV miles and that included what would normally be about a mile worth of gasoline consumption (.022 gallons). So, you might think of the old PHEV as having a battery EV range of 11 - 1 or 10 miles. Twice that would be 20 miles without efficiency improvements. The old PHEV was rated as 95 MPGe and the new is 120 MPGe but the old PHEV was 95 MPGe because the mile or so worth of gasoline dragged down what would have otherwise been a higher battery-only MPGe. Also, bigger batteries can typically allow you use a larger state of charge range. The old PHEV used about 62% of the nominal battery capacity. We don't yet know how much they use in the new battery.

    Life is complicated.

Every other post, someone jumps in here to tell PriusChat: " I can't wait for March 31st to put a $1000 deposit on a Model 3".
