I understand your position. You are an outlier. Tesla has proven it by taking over the Model S's segment.

I disagree. I'm normal. Model S drivers are outliers. Asking your kids to wait 40 minutes with nothing to do so you can make it to the next charge station is not rational. Not being able to go into and explore our national parks because of no ability to recharge is not rational. Not being able to go up into the mountains off the beaten path and make it back without a hundred+ mile tow is not rational.

Sure, I can see myself wasting time at a charging station instead of this, absolutely!:)

The target I mentioned is straight from the horse's mouth. I agree with you that Tesla's timing track record is... poor. We'll see how it goes. Their company's future ambitions quite literally depend on getting Model 3 right.

You can disagree, but you're incorrect. You can't take the #1 sales spot in your segment relying on outliers.

The "segment" is automobiles. Very, very few people buy Tesla's (50,000 a year out of 20,000,000 a year - a quarter of 1%), both because they are outrageously expensive and because they are not very useful if you leave the city.

Yeah, I'm afraid Toyota won't give us a choice of a bargain basement model similar to the Prius Two with the Prime... You'll likely have to get it with most of the optional technology packages standard, with starting price in the mid $30K range, which would be a mistake IMO, for those that don't care for the optional stuff, you may as well get the Volt at that price.

Again, this is not correct. The Model S segment is large luxury sedans, and Tesla is #1. Tesla's are quite useful on interstate drives-not everywhere yet, but for many. And to your example with kids: yes, it's far more likely that I want to stop every 3-4 hours for a bathroom / food break for them (both are located near virtually every Supercharger) than to get back on the highway after a 3-minute fillup. Some people would rather go 1200 miles in a day, but those are outliers.

Now I'm truly out, as I don't want to disrespect others in this thread by continuing to derail it. Just wanted to express my opinion on the relative merits of the Prime and M3 based on what we know so far.

Not that it matters, but I own 2 Priuses and do hope the Prime does well. I'm just ready to be done with gasoline and Tesla still seems to be the only manufacturer taking that goal seriously. (Don't get me started on hydrogen)

The volume of cargo for this PHV is a no go for me. We see in pics that the level is above the opening of car boot. You can do 600+ miles with the car but you can't take so much stuff with you (holidays). I always tough that puting 4 battery packs on the bottom, internal of each doors could save a lot but may bring other problems.. Cargo space is too much cut with this battery pack and from what i see there is no more battery pack behind rear passenger seats... I like the big tesla like screen but in fact that's all :-(

skewz me? ... isn't comparing /contrasting prius plugin with fusion - tesla - volt - cmax mitsu plugin's etc why we're here? Thank you Mr. thread nazi - perhaps you could enlighten all PC members on which rides are permissible to mention here?
    ;)
And please excuse me for the dry humor - but yeah there are other manufacturers offerings mentioned throughout this thread. It's ok....

That wasn't my intent at all. I felt that I was pushing the thread toward Prime vs Tesla and didn't want to hijack. Please, carry on. :) My barbs about derailing were directed at me, not you.

I think akio toyoda with his tesla roadster knows people will be happy to charge for 5 hours at night;)

I get 6.2kwh to charge 22 miles@120 mpge, if there are 10% charging losses that makes 5.6 usable out of 8.8kwh or 64% SOC which seems reasonable in a phev. All-in-all I think these are good engineering numbers. WIth a 12 amp L1 charger it will take around 5 hours.

I also think the prius prime is more attractive than the gen IV liftback:cool: Some may buy it over that for looks alone.

What I don't get is the 4 seats. It seems like 8.8 kwh could fit with 5 seats, and if you are going down to 4, why not make it 30 mile range or 13.2kw, after tax credits the price wouldn't be very different in the US which was the main market for the prius phv. Either way this should drastically outsell the mirai in japan and california:ROFLMAO:

I'm assessing a near $40K price tag price for the Prius Prime, and It may not be fully loaded,
There are no "trim" prices available yet that will differentiate for some purchaser decisions.

idk, that sounds high to me. it was okay on the first go around, but competition is getting stiffer.
still, i suppose it depends on how many they want to sell.

I will be laying my $1000 deposit for the Tesla MODEL 3 by the end of the month.
Meanwhile, Two years will give me a great use of my Fusion Energi.
