I picked up a (barely) running 2007 today, fully loaded, for $750. The PO said he was driving down the highway, it ran hot, and he had the car towed to a dealer. The PO decided to buy another car, and I picked it up. The car sounded like a can of bolts when I started it, and drove it onto my car dolly, but it ran. Once home, I put it on TIS and have never saw so many codes... From this point on, the car will only move a few feet in gear, then goes into neutral by itself, and it acts like the gas pedal is not connected anymore. Some of the DTC's returned too, I have marked them with an * above, and there were some new ones. Hybrid Control P3000 Engine & ECT P1116 HV Battery P0A80 The car has a lot of miles, 260k, but it is pretty clean, with JBL & SAT, and the AC blew cold for the short time I had it on. Is this car just cursed, or is there a chance at getting a little more life out of her? I thought for sure, that the car had bad plugs causing the misfire, but after the trans started acting up, the engine ran a little better, but by then the main battery alert came on, and I shut her down. Where do I even start on this, or should I start stripping the goodies off of her, for one of my other 2 base models? Appreciate any guidance! Tj
I love a challenge and I like to logic things out. If I had that challenge in front of me I would focus on the engine and go from there. I had a 02, and it had a bad fuel pump, nothing worked because the engine would not run and charge the main battery. Find people you trust, to help you. On the other side of things if you are scrapping parts, I'm really looking for a luggage cover, I'm willing to pay.
Do you really want or need 3 Prius? If you could get this one running "well" at 260K is it likely to be better than either of your other 2 Prius? If the answer is no to either or both of those questions then I think the easiest answer is to look at this purchase as a $750 investment into a donor parts car. Which really might not be a bad investment in it's own right. BUT.... If you're looking for a rebuilding challenge regardless of the reality? Well good luck. With the description you give, coupled with the plethora of codes it is throwing, it could be the PC challenge of the year.
nice collection of codes you got there Tj lol hopefully a new 12v eliminates a few of the above, good luck
The first thing I would do is check the tire pressure! It's going to be fascinating to follow this saga, I can only hope this goes well!
Sounds like you bit off more than you can chew. Get a temporary subscription to Toyota TIS (Technical Information System). This will give you access to the complete factory manual and the trouble shooting tree for each code. https://techinfo.toyota.com/techInfoPortal/appmanager/t3/ti?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=ti_home_page&contextType=external&username=string&password=sercure_string&challenge_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftechinfo.toyota.com%2FtechInfoPortal%2Flogin%2Ftechinfo&request_id=-6614760075949939693&authn_try_count=0&locale=en_US&resource_url=https%253A%252F%252Ftechinfo.toyota.com%252F
I bought the car hoping to resolve the cooling issue, and have another 50mpg car in our driveway (large family). But this may be one of those times where it is more practical to just use what we can and sell or scrap the rest. I'll swap a good 12v in and see what she does, but I'm not holding my breath. Swapping all the good stuff over to one of my other cars is going to be a lot of work. Oh well, no pain no gain! Tj
Assuming the body is good and you can install a used engine & transaxle, that might take care of a lot of known issues. A used steering motor might be needed too. How much would a used engine, transaxle, & steering unit cost? I wonder why there would be air bag codes? Was the car in an accident?
