I have time of day metering that allows me to pay @ 7 cents per KWH when charging at night and on weekends, but makes me pay @ 24 cents at other times. I only charge during nights and weekends, since I assume that, at @ $2.00 per gallon it does not pay to plug in at other times. BUT, I'd really like a simple calculator that would allow me to plug in cost of electricity and cost of gas and be told if it makes more sense to use house electricity or to use gas. Does anybody know of a website where this exists? Or can someone upload a spread sheet that would allow this to be computed? Thanks
it always makes more sense to use electricity. with a range of 15 miles or so, you're already using too much gas.
Saving the earth is noble, doing so while saving money is even better It would be great if the Prius had an on board calculator or if someone developed a smart phone app.
Well compare the number of kWh versus the number of gallons of gas to drive the same distance. According to the EPA, it takes 29 kWh to drive 100 miles in the PiP, or 2 gallons of gas to drive 100 miles. To make it simple, let's divide all numbers by 2, so it would take 14.5 kWh or 1 gallon to drive 50 miles. Therefore, according to EPA numbers: At 24 cents/kWh, it would cost you $3.48 to drive 50 miles. At 7 cents/kWh, it would cost you $1.015 to drive 50 miles. Source: 2015 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid
This was the tool that I wanted.... Very helpful. Now I am just waiting for the new PIP so that I will get a larger charge from the wall during off peak rates. merged What is your price of electricity?
24 cents/ kwh. it was 16 cents when i bought the pip in 2012, and gas was four dollars. my, how things change.
7 cents is extremely cheap; probably the lowest cost per kWh I've ever heard of. I pay 8 cents at all times. The link below is a spreadsheet where you can compare the cost of ownership of 2 vehicles. It has a breakdown for fuel cost, and can compare the cost of using gas vs electricity. It's probably confusing for most people because I built it for my own use and included many variables. The top section is the variables you input, and the bottom section auto calculates the various costs. Vehicle Cost of Ownership.xlsx - Google Sheets
