I was able to replace my front door mounted tweeters in my Gen 2. I'm in the "over the hill crowd" and my high frequency hearing isn't what is used to be, so I always like good tweeters in my car's systems. It really made a nice difference over the stock tweeters. Are there any tweeters in the new Prius, and if so where are they located? Overall, how is the sound system, compared to prior years?

The PCP equipped 4 and 4 Touring have 10 speakers, as opposed to 6 on all other models. I wonder where those 4 extra speakers are mounted?

I'm wondering now too! I have a Four Touring. I know there's two by the windshield and one in each front door. I haven't really looked, honestly. I like the sound, though. Very clean and clear. The bass has a slight thump, but not overpowering.

A couple of the speakers are co-located.

    Dash - 80mm midrange + 16mm tweeter
    Front doors - 170mm subwoofers
    Rear doors - 170mm full range + 25mm tweeter

Under the front passenger seat - 6-channel 432W Hi8 amplifier

    Here's the marketing info:

    80-mm midrange/16-mm tweeter
A new, lightweight, high-performing design, engineered to ensure that speakers, amplifier, equalisation and component placement work as an efficient ensemble.

    170-mm subwoofers
Large woofers with acoustic lenses for improved sound dispersion everywhere in the vehicle, present midrange and lower frequencies, including deep, dramatic, balanced bass.

    170-mm full range/25-mm tweeter

Large woofers with integral acoustic lenses help fill the Prius with clear, low-distortion sound, with bass response optimised for a variety of musical genres.

    6-channel, 432-watt Hi8 amplifier
A high-efficiency, high-performing design with exceptional Sound Pressure Levels (SPL) and a simpler, lower mass architecture for less power consumption.

So are the 10 speakers instead of the normal 6 one of the perks of buying a touring model (plus bigger rims)?.... Or must you still buy one of the extra packages for the upgraded stereo system?

The upgraded JBL audio is part of the Premium Convenience Package.

Thanks for the info. However, the pictures are for the 2015 version. Unfortunately I do not have pictures of the new ones yet. If I get into it I will update.

Anyone else notice that the volume level of the non-JBL needs to be turned up pretty high to be at good volume level? At least that is my perspective. No so the case in my wife's RAV4.

If you are streaming Bluetooth, make sure the volume on your phone is turned up to the highest level, otherwise, it will not be as loud through your car, even with the vehicle volume turned up high.

It may be my ears(used to install car stereos.....I blame the bass).... But the stock stereo in my 3 Touring isn't too bad. I've had a few GM cars with FAR worse stereos.

With that said - in my Gen2 I swapped out my door speakers for Focal Utopia's, sounds pretty nice(wife has that car now and barely ever uses the radio.... $1k tweets and mids wasted...).

Honestly it's the best factory stereo I've had. My WRX had a factory system with subwoofer, my fully loaded '15 Kia Sorento had a factory system with sub woofer, and neither vehicle sounds better than the base model stereo. My wife and I are convinced there has to be a sub woofer somewhere.

For me it depends on the song I'm listening too. I noticed that some bass heavy songs will sound great at level 20. And on other hand i'll need to turn up say a pop song to level 35-40 to hear it. I'm pretty consistent on my speed while driving.

I have the base prius. I also notice that the usb lighting cable produces a clearer louder sound than via bluetooth but i guess that's a given!

Does anyone know who the manufacturer of the Prius audio infotainment system is?

If I had to guess, I'd say it is one of:
    • Panasonic
    • Pioneer
    • Alpine
Oh, and I now have the 10-speaker version in the 4 ATP/PCP

I would bet a sizable amount of money against it being an Alpine..... Installed hundreds of them many moons ago - the system and infotainment unit are respectable, but not along the lines of Alpine.

Pioneer could be possible - but I think a better bet may be a company like Delphi,

Nice, I actually think it sounds better. Also I like that they removed the upper rear door speakers as it blasted in your ear.

Still need a volume compressor that limits upper volumes from all sources.

That upper speaker couldn't blast in your ear since those were tweeters and didn't have much power. I am happy moreso as a visual thing. It didn't look very nice.
