Has anyone noticed that almost all the military veterans running for Congress, particularly those who served in Iraq, are Democrats?

I love being in the military because I can set the record straight. I'm in the Air Force and the Department of Defense under Rumsfeld and Bush want to cut 50,000 personnel from the Air Force in the next few years. We have downsized so much in our military clinic, that we don't have enough personnel to do the job. Re-enlistment rates are at an all time low. Army suicide rates are at an all time high. Our annual cost of living increase is consistently 1/2% below the Federal inflation rate. I've been in the Air Force for 18 years and have served under Republican and Democratic presidents.

We are treated poorly by ALL parties. We are used like pawns during every election year cycle. The Congress is talking about giving us a bigger cost of living increase this year. Why? Mid term elections this fall. Please don't assume that a Republican will do a better job with the military. It's simply urban legend. But people always assume that Republicans treat the military better. Simply not true.

There is one exception, Reagan, in 1980, increased pay for all active duty personnel and out spent the Soviets to win the Cold War.

Bush 1, with Cheney as Sec Def, downsized the military, but this happens every 10-20 years anyway.

Clinton reduced our out of pocket expenses for off base housing and did the right thing with "Don't Ask, Don't Tell".

The success of a Republican or Democratic president with respect to the military has alot to do with what is going on in the world at the time they are president.

And.....our economy did better in the 1990's under Clinton. Surplus, remember???????

    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(larkinmj @ May 13 2006, 09:26 PM) </div>
Yes, I have. I think I heard on Meet the Press that there is one Republican veteran running for office. That says alot because the majority of active duty military are Republican. I'm the token Democrat in my unit. There actually are a few more, but not too many. So for so many veterans to run as Democrats says something about the direction they want to take this country and our military.

One more thing......contractors, like Haliburton, are going to ruin our military. THAT is the biggest problem facing the military. THAT is where all the money is going. Not to us, the troops, but civilian contractors. It's another big business scandal with Republican tentacles around it. Our base commanders complain about it, we complain about it. The only people who aren't are the contractors and the shareholders.

Even though I think you have pretty much made up your mind that Bush has done a horrible job and was a mistake, I will state that I would vote for Bush again, even knowing what I know now.

I'd like to repel Bush as well. I find him quite repellant.

I doubt you'll REPEAL any amendment. Not for Bush to get a third term. Not for Schwarzenegger to run for President.

I have two bumper stickers I'll be putting on my car.

"Don't blame me. I voted for Gore and Kerry."

    and

    "Barack Obama 2008.

Absolute truth. Harry Truman once said that the worst form of treason was war profiteering. When Truman was a Senator, he travelled all over the country documenting waste and fraud by defense contractors. We need a Truman committee to investigate the abuses committed by Halliburton, Bechtel, and other contractors. There have been a few bi-partisan attempts in the House and Senate to create an oversight committee, but these efforts have been thwarted. In the meantime, not only are we taxpayers being ripped off for billions of dollars, but our troops suffer for lack of sufficient hot meals and body armor. The Iraqi oil that geniuses like Paul Wolfowitz assured us would finance the war hasn't been flowing as expected- partly because Halliburton did not perform the repairs on pipelines that they were paid to do.

And as disgusting as this administration's treatment of our active duty troops has been (while admonishing us to "support our troops"- don't forget to put the yellow ribbon on your SUV!), its treatment of veterans has been even worse. The fact that many of our veterans are among the homeless is a national disgrace.

Excuse me....but this administration is taking money out of my pocket, deciding what is best for me, and at no time has asked, listened or showed concern for what I want. In fact, they have repeatedly kept secrets, justifying them with the parental its for the best blah blah crap.

I think you better reexamine your ideology and you better take off the rose colored glasses and take a good, unbiased look at what's going on. It isn't the grand old party any more.

Oh, and that "tax" break that was just passed? I think I get $56. While the rich will get in the five digits. Thanks a lot. Another big lie. Or perhaps misdirection for the gullible. You call that keeping your money? It's a cheat, a lie, a shell game. This administration has run up the highest deficit in history and we'll be paying for it for decades. $180,000 for every man, woman and child. This administration is butting their noses in to state and local affairs where they have no business. This administration is costing me money in higher gas, food, clothes, energy, you name it. And $56 won't begin to pay for it. That's not even two tanks of gas.

Because I want to keep my money and because I want my voice heard in goverment I will NEVER vote for any Republican ever again. I don't care what they say. I don't care what their voting record is. The Republican party has shown themselves to be a self-indulgent, ego-centric, special interest toadying pack of liars whose only concern is protecting themselves and their rich campaign contributors and I wouldn't trust any of them to hold the position of dog catcher.

I am for the Harkonnen gambit. The Bush family has plans. We have seen Rabban the dumber brother next will come Feyd-Rautha aka Jeb to "save" us from the beast after that the Reichstag will burn and then there will be change. And "we" will vote them in.

    I like Barack also.
I have two bumper stickers on my car (I had more on my previous vehicle, but I've only had my Prius 3 1/2 months :) ) One says, "ExxposeExxon"; the other is in my avatar ;)

I'm with AndrewGS. If I could go back in time I would vote for Bush again, but only because he was facing the even-worse Kerry. Funny, I voted for Gore in 2000, then was pleasantly surprised by Bush's first term, then voted for Bush in '04, and have dramatically lowered my opinion of him. He's still better than Kerry, though, hehe.

I hope to vote enthusiastically for McCain in '08. Obama is cool but he won't run so soon.

Yes -- then and now. Should I have voted for that bloated blow hard, John Kerry? Give me a break! If Democrats want to take back the White House they will have to put forth a credible candidate -- one who will refrain from stabbing this country in the back in the name of cheap politics, and one who knows what he believes, not what the latest poll tells him it would be expedient to believe.

How can Republicans put up McCain with a straight face after what they've done to him and said about him for the last 8 years? Were they lieing then or will they be lieing now?

Oh, that's easy. All that time in the POW camp didn't break him, but the Republicans finally did. McCain is a broken man. Now he will lick the boots of the Religious Right with the best of them and do whatever his puppetmasters tell him to.

Read it again! " .....no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once . . ." Wont work - sorry.

You know, I STILL shake my head at the naivete of those who claim going into Iraq was wrong because THEY somehow made their own determination Iraq wasn't a threat... It's not even worth arguing anymore, you either believe it is or it isn't, too late now, and THANKFULLY Bush went in and threw Saddam in a cage. All things said and done, thank goodness we have a President that was actually willing to take action and DO SOMETHING. After Afghanistan and Iraq, who do you think is eager to attempt another 9/11 and attract the ire of the United States?

Unfortunately, this country has been effectively neutered by a force far worse than terrorism: liberalism. Too bad we no longer have the nuts to go after Syria, N. Korea, AND Iran, and finish the fight, so to speak. Instead, another half-assed Vietnam-esque quagmire we've gotten ourselves into because we have to respect rights, not fire into Mosques, and give our enemies Constitutional protections. Makes me F'IN sick, maybe we should just arm our soldiers with tazer guns or rubber bullets...

The biggest danger to this country isn't outside its borders, but the forces weakening it from within. Already many parts of the world see Americans as arrogant a-holes, and you know what? GOOD. Why should we be humble? To satisfy the rest of the world? Why should we be humbled? Because we can all drive big gas guzzling SUV's? Jealousy, simple as that. Whenever someone gets to the top of the pile, everyone tries to pull them down...

Truthfully, I have more respect for terrorists than most liberals. At least one has a mission and is fighting for something, the other is just an insidious virus that eats away at the very soul and foundation of our country.

Yeah, if I had to vote for Bush again, I'd do it.

My only regret is that I have only one vote to give for this country!

Live long and prosper 'o Commander in Chief....

I will assume that I am included in your asinine generalization, as I am an unapologetic liberal. I also served in this country's military, and I venture to say have done more to make this world a better place than you have. I have no regard for right-wingnuts who say idiotic things such as liberals are as bad as terrorists. You must be a disciple of Ann Coulter.
As a veteran, and I would say a REAL patriot- that is, someone who really works to make my country a better place for all, not just someone who engages in mindless nationalism- I have no regard for the opinions of ranters like you.

Thats about the only thing you have ever posted that makes sense. You are absolutely right about that. I would include intolerance, bigotry, and corporate greed among those "forces."
