I really need some help making a decision regarding my 2005 Prius. I bought it new and have been the only owner. I live in the BC lower mainland so the weather has always been moderate. It has 310,000 km (193,000 miles). My driving is about 50/50 highway and city. I've always regularly maintained it and the only major replacement was a cat converter about 4 years ago. A few years ago, I switched to synthetic oil after reading discussions on this forum. As far as I can tell there is absolutely nothing wrong with the car. I'm thinking about selling it and buying a new one. My husband and I are recently retired, and I'd like to get a car that could last until I no longer want to drive (my 80s). My dilemma is the asking price for either trade-in or private. I've got it listed for $4888 Cdn right now and have had a nibble but nothing serious. Up here in Vancouver, other listings for Prius' in the 2005 - 2006 range are asking 5300 (2005 with 300,000 km) up to $10,000 Cdn for Prius' with around 120 - 150,000 km. (Personally I think that's a 'little' high.) One dealer offered us $1000 Cdn which was a little insulting in my opinion. The car is running just fine. It is worth more than $1000. I get about 5.5 km/100 k on the highway cruising at 100 km/hr and 5.0 - 6.0 in the city depending on how cold it is, and how long the drive. In the fall I bought new tires (Michelen Defender) and had the rear brakes done. Right now, if I was offered $3000 to $3500 Cdn as a trade-in I think I should take it. Opinions? Comments?
it's only worth what someone will pay for it. if the dealer is offering 1,000 and you're asking 4,800, why not try 3,900. or something?
