    If you want to help maximize your engine life, lift the hood every now and then and check the oil level.

    This can be counter-intuitive since people think that they don't have to check fluids with a new car, or when the oil has recently been changed or just before an oil change....etc.

    Actually?
    These are times when oil fluid checks are MORE important.

    It's not as sexy as going out and buying a new scan-toy or using some engine additive, so people generally don't do it.
    That's why I'll betcha you're probably going to see "Sudden excessive oil use" threads in the G4 section before the next President is sworn in.

    Trivia Question: What exactly IS excessive oil use in a G4 according to the manual? :)

    I had a look, they don't appear to quantify excess usage anymore, at least not in the Owner's Manual.

    It's very hard to over-rev an engine, and nearly impossible with a CVT. Go to an autocross sometime and listen to the manual-trans cars; you'll hear them rev up and then make a quick knocking sound, 5 or 6 times in a second--that's the rev limiter (called a "soft limiter"--it doesn't cut fuel or anything, just doesn't allow the engine to spin any faster). When someone downshifts that same manual-transmission car but they intended to upshift, then the engine can over-rev briefly if they were at or near redline; I've seen this happen a few times (once in a 2003 Viper--that guy thought for sure he had broken something), and every time the cars have been fine afterward.

    Speeding up to pass someone? Nothing to worry about.

    I'm with you brother, I don't like aggressive a holes either. I'm generally very safe, but I would have likely done the same thing.

    I had similar concerns with the 2016 Eco. I have to make a left turn onto a 45 mile an hour road with no turning lane to get out of my neighborhood, and if it's busy then I oftentimes have to hit the accelerator pretty hard in order not to slow down the person who ends up being behind me. I've noticed that in the 2016, which I do drive in Eco mode, the engine gets quite loud when you hit the gas. More so than my 2010 prius for sure. :

    So this morning, I took the normal exit off the super highway and the car in front STOPPED at the right turn. Thex exit merges into a lane that continues 1/4 mile to the next light and suddenly, I'm stopped and the two cars behind me. The Jeep jerk sounded his horn and I raised my hands in helplessness because the car in front had all of us blocked.

    I'm thinking this exit lane needs some of those road blisters so the car making the turn can not just drive into the middle lane but has to proceed. I need to write it up and send it to the highway department.

    Calm about blowing the engine, it is computer controlled. Recent tests with our Gen-3 revealed we can't reach 5,200 rpm until the speed is at least 76 mph and then it hold flat all the way to 105 mph.

    It's a Prius man, you're not gonna blow the engine by accelerating - there's no laptop flashing "DANGER TO MANIFOLD" or NOS button. It's not even like an RSX when you miss the 3-4 shift highway racing.

    I'm as guilty as anyone from time to time.
    But if I'm reading the OP's original post correctly the OP drove in the oncoming traffic lane to avoid a pothole.

    Not a good idea.

    Then when someone tries to pass him?

    Acing someone out as two lanes merge into one?

    Also NOT a good idea.

    Teaching someone a "lesson" while driving at or above highway speeds? Never a good idea.

    You are already driving emotionally, and you never can predict how the other person is going to react. Especially as you head towards two lanes merging into one, this is a good recipe for a potentially horrific accident.

    Did you damage your Prius? No.

    Whom the "loser" is? Very debatable.

    Oncoming traffic lane with no oncoming traffic but with cars behind me and on the right side of the lane next to me. The common sense thing to do is go where there was no traffic. Or you know, just stop and make the guy behind me angrier to wait to turn to the other lane that, like I said, has cars or drive over the pot hole and possibly replace the tire. Also no one said anything about highway speeds. Don't assume anything.

    How big was this pot hole?

    I often either just take the bump OR try to line the vehicle up so that my tires aren't going in the rut, that is- drive over but not through.

    I understand that there was no oncoming traffic at that precise moment. But I still generally side with the idea that it's a good habit to develop in NOT using the oncoming lane unless the pothole or obstruction represents a safety risk in of itself.

    Also if I'm following someone and they are driving in the oncoming lane? I might decide I don't want to follow this person. Maybe I don't see the pot hole, and all I see is some yahoo driving in the oncoming lane.

    In any case, seriously, I've been guilty of similar reactions from time to time, but bottom line? Driving with your emotions at high speeds is NOT a good idea.

    The Prius will not let you get anywhere redline. It operates in a strict rpm band and the ICE never gets anywhere near redline even with the pedal punched to the floor.

    I've had a few of those moments, and I'm a hypermiler, but try to make them rarer and rarer.

    Between real jobs, I worked mostly with 25-30 some thing guys driving cars on the job for $10 an hour. Too many cigarettes, too much cussing, AND too much speeding. The kind of people I worked with are more likely than most to be that person that was rude to you...some one that is in a big hurry but gets nowhere in life.
