Mobil 1 - What's recommended

I think the manual says 5W-30 and 3.9 qts. (nice round number). Have to be careful not to overfil with the complete last quart.

There have been many posts with complaints about the dealerships overfilling the oil, the 3.9 number in the manual might have something to do with it.

When I change my oil I pour in 3 quarts and add more if it needs it, but it never takes more than 3.5 quarts.

If you take it to a dealer for changing, some will allow you to bring in your own oil. Give them 3 quarts and tell them you'll put in the rest. If you give them 4 quarts, they'll be inclined to put all in.

 

3.9 is a misprint. when filling a dry engine it takes 3.9. under normal oil changes, you will never get a dry engine, there is usually about 1/2-3/4 of a quart still in the engine. i would suggest 3 quarts and check the level. 3.25 seems to work well for me though.

You sure about that? My change took just short of 4 quarts.

I just don't see how putting a quart less could raise fuel economy, in any case, as some has suggested in other threads.

Your Owner'a Manual has extensive information regarding ICE lubrication. Try Section 8-2, page 283 and 312 in the back section.

 

My dealer refused to do it with three bottoles of Mobil-1. I had to run to a auto shop to get an extra one.

 

I just received a mailing of a Toyota technical service bulletin which states that I should use 0W-20 ILSAC GF-4 motor oil in my Prius. This is a synthetic oil and a rather pricey one at that, about $45. Has anyone out there used synthetic oil? It is supposed to increase gas mileage and cold starting performance.

 

i have used 3.5 quart of mobil1 for 2 years now...changed mine myself from day 1...i have a 2004 pkg #9

I imagine it doesn't get too warm in New England, thats probably why they sent the bulletin to you. I'm going to keep running Royal Purple 5W-30 in mine as it doesn't get too far below freezing in the winter time.

On my last oil change the parts shop gave me 3 quarts of Royal Purple "Racing 11"(similar to 5W-20) and 1 quart of RP 5W-30. I didn't notice until I pulled the oil filter off but figured that the Prius could benefit from a lighter oil so I used the 5W-30 and filled it the rest of the way with the "Racing 11"

Yes I am pretty sure as it came from the Toyota dealer where I purchased my new Prius. It is TSB EG018-06, looks official was issued March 29, 2006. The box which says TSB update notice states"The information contained in this TSB supercedes TSB No. EG001-06. TSB No. EG001-06 is now obsolete and should be discarded." There is another box with this note "For Prius vehicles, refer to TSB No. EG050-04, Engine Oil Specifications." Then further down it reads Applicable Vehicles 2006-2007 model year Toyota and Scion vehicles. Is there somewhere online to look up TSB's? I am not convinced this bulletin refers to my prius but the dealership says it does. What do ya'll think?

Yes, the TSB specifically excludes the Prius.

 

Thanks for the reply. I read the thread. Seems like I can use whichever 5W-20 or 0W-20. In my colder region of the country I might be better off with the 0W-20.
