Ok y'all maybe I can get some answers here since I have looked high and low and haven't found crap. I am looking to upgrade my exhaust, however I want something louder but not fart can- esque. I have a couple engine mods already, but no one would ever know because the stock exhaust sucks donkey dong. I was looking on sigma, but not sure the toms or the ganador are worth the money. I've managed to find a prius online with a Remus exhaust but can't find the actual set up. I also know justdidit has a custom job with magnaflows but I really wanna hear the exhaust before I pull the trigger and buy/install the set up. I've definitely outgrown the fart can days (had that crap on my old RX7). Any input is helpful.
You can make it louder, but you can't make it better. Stock will yield the best MPG and power, all else is lipstick on a pig. (Supercharging or Turbocharging will make noticeably more power, but the plumbing is difficult)
No offense, but I would completely disagree with you. All of my Mods have been track tested with a result of better track times. Its just amazing to see so many aftermarket parts in Japan for the Prius that has not crossed over to the U.S. Market. @Acidbass32 your best bang for your buck would be to take a visit to your local muffler shop and have them set up a custom exhaust setup which includes upgrading the diameter of the stock piping.
jury is still out on exhaust improvements. no one's ever dyno'd a modded prius that I know of, and though it looks like the cheesy factory exhaust pipe is choking the snot out of the ice, it might be the Atkinson cycle doesn't need a decent sized exhaust. but a polished stainless steel Yaris header would look cool as $#!+. of course you'd only see it when you change the oil...
Atkinson cycle engine is design to deliver torque at low rpm like a diesel, better flowing exhaust system will results little gain at high rpm like 5,000 rpm up, on the negative side system needs exhaust back pressure for optima mpg What a fast car? BUY a sports car/ supercar!
It's always an uphill battle when you try to share the great benefits of modding a Prius to help improve its handling and performance! Some people get it and others are stuck in the past. To each his/her own! iPhone ?
I do not think anyone claimed the handling cannot be improved. (there will be ride trade offs) Improving the performance can be done at the expense of gas mileage, an engine swap with the Otto version of the Prius engine is a 30% HP gain. But you lose all reason to have bought a Prius. (if you bought a Prius by mistake, go for it)
My prius is mod for handling, the trade off results is harsh uncomfortable ride, gone from 17 to 16 wheels and softer tires. this don't really void warranty and easily put back to stock. Messing w hybrid system works hand in hand with ice/ emission system will void any warranty claims and violates federal/state/local emission regulations. Some people just knows better.
handling mods don't have to make the ride harsh: better sway bars and a strut tower brace help a lot without rougher ride. since no one here has been involved with the engineering or computer modeling of the prius ice, anything anyone says is pure conjecture. until someone does dyno a modded prius exhaust, all we have is butt dyno anecdotes, and folks like me who enjoy modding just for the fun of it. there was one lady who installed the toms muffler; she said it sounded better, but since it only replaced the rear section it couldn't have done anything to reduce back-pressure. if I had the extra $$, I would indeed install a yaris header, and replace everything behind the cats with larger SS pipe and muffler. but I don't.
Well it seems I need to dyno my little gen 2 again and play with exhaust mods as I go. I was just hoping for it to sound a little throatier but not sure I wanna take the chance with close to a grand on the line considering I just forked over a bundle for the sun hyperforce system and k sport coilovers.
Can't say I've ran the car on the dyno so no HP numbers to back up my butt-o-meter..and it wasn't really cheap.. but I love my DC Sports header, 2nd Cat delete and Custom MagnaFlow exhaust.
I really like the way that looks, did it increase the sound at all? Because I am tempted to just get the Ganador exhaust from sigma
Improved flow overall with my custom intake. Been said by a co-worker that it sounds throaty like a VQ engine but deeper. The hybrid battery charges up faster, no MPG update yet on my 2007 but it improved quite a bit with my 2008. Definitely feels quicker,but no dyno proof of course. Really feel like the OEM headers, the (2) cats, resonator and muffler as well as the reduced piping size really limited the "potential" of the little 1.5L. I can't single handedly prove it improved my MPG but I know with the combination of the custom intake AND the custom Header back exhaust i felt a performance increase when I flogged my car and I saw a mpg increase when I drove economical. Best run ever on stock exhaust with stock intake with OEM 16" wheels was 44mpg - I was getting constantly above 50mpg once I finished the entire exhaust setup. MPG depend largely on driving style, but also terrain and climate. In SoCal I was getting 41mpg with my 19s and now here in Canada I'm getting 40mpgish. During the winter which is a majority of the weather up here - I struggle to get 38mpg.

Overall how much did the set up cost? I am playing with the idea of getting the DC yaris header and putting an HKS system on, but if the magnaflow set up is cheaper and sounds better. Why not just stick to what works. I had a Greddy exhaust on my supra and it was amazing, and I have stacks on my F-250. Only makes sense that I have a daily that can make some noise, as well as increases performance. As you said in your mod journal, the stock piping is far too small and limits the potential.
There are (4) 4" Magnaflow mufflers in total - cost about $65 ea ($260 for all 4), the header from THMotorsports for around $385. So with labor and material about $1000...roughly.
I have a Flowmaster super 10 series muffler on my new Ram. It's the smallest and loudest they make. Might be worth inquiring if one of them might fit? It's about the size of a purse... Unless due to size restrictions you need the glass pack style piping then go that route.
