I am wondering if the following is normal… there are times when it seems to be much more noticeable when the ICE shuts off at a stop light. Sometimes it is hardly noticeable…but, there are times when you notice it more than others. Tks in advance
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(mdh @ May 8 2006, 08:37 PM) </div> Pretty normal, esp. when the car is newer or the weather is cold. Nothing wrong.
Yep. It'll be smoother if it's warmer and once broken in. It was really harsh at times when I first got the car.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Tideland Prius @ May 8 2006, 07:01 PM) </div> tks.. my car has about 500 miles on it.
Mine has about 3500 on it and it does it maybe once a week... and its when its cold.... not cold outside per se, but when the engine is cold.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(windstrings @ May 8 2006, 09:55 PM) </div> Windstrings where have you been? I concur that rough shut down is a product of the HSD on some occasions. A lot of speculation on what causes it, but you can live with it!
The car shudders noticeably when the engine shuts off at a stop when the HSD is in Stage 3. This is the last stage before it is ready to move to Stage 4 (normal hybrid operation). In other words, when the car is not yet warmed up. Once the car is fully warmed up, this should almost never happen. (But there are oddities about HSD that nobody outside of Toyota seems to understand.) So the short answer is: don't worry: it's normal. I do not concur with people who say it will not happen once the car is broken in. Mine has 13,000 miles on it and still does this when moving from Stage 3 to Stage 4.

"is that a bad sign?"... opps.. could be  Anyway... I"ve been in a whirlwind trying to sell my house. anyway, I get the impression as its warming up the fuel air mixture is a little unstable sometimes. It only does it rarely.... I don't worry about it since so many other people have the same issue.... I have two and they both will do it occasionally, but its so rare I barely notice.
My Prius has ~5800 miles on it and it does this 'rough' sort of shutdown for the first ICE shutdown after it's been powered on. Usually 2-3 times a day, depending on how long the car has been parked. It's just the initial ICE shutdown where it really shudders something rough, then all the subsequent shutdowns are practically undetectable.
we just hit 30K and have it quite frequently, but from reading the website it is because our typical commute is barely 4 miles, our car never warms up properly. I'll probably make a point to go the long way every now and then to just let her purr, maybe crank it up 100% to a 8 mile commute LOL. it seems to me that the shudder is a torquing stress, so wouldn't a long term implication be a loose motor mount? I'll ask the service repair on monday ... oh yeah, when we were in the sacramento valley we seldom ever noticed it. b
