Talked to the dealership today. They got the warranty claim approved and the short block is currently being installed.

Verbatim, what I'm being told is "There was scorching on the cylinder #1 wall from where the piston was going down. It was 'out of round' about 3/100 of a millimeter, and this was allowing oil to pass through".

Essentially, the cylinder was slightly warped, from what I"m understanding.

    Same problem, JStrenk?

Edit: Loaded the full site. Yeah, I read your thread.. that's really strange. I went through three oil consumption tests where they stated I didn't hit that magical 600 mile/quart marker. However, when I dropped it off last week, it did hit that marker... so it's either luck or I was just persistent.

The warranty company wasn't happy to approve the claim (there was some back and forth, my advisor said), but they did after given the evidence and history of me bringing it into multiple dealers the past year for the same oil loss problem.

Best $975 I have ever paid for a warranty. Was the Toyota 7yr/100K extended one through Toyota Financial.

I have no doubt that the cylinder could be out of round, however 3/100 of a millimeter is not a lot of variation. That amount works out to roughly .0011 in inches which is a very small amount. The average human hair measures .003 to give you a reference.

It is interesting that based on those figures the warranty is allowing for the new short block. Bottom line is you are getting your money's worth out of your extended warranty.

That's interesting. Warped or worn? Had the engine ever run low on coolant or overheated?

i'm sure it was worn. when rings get stuck in grooves, they lose flexibility and wear out cylinders prematurely.

overheating would warp the head, but not the block.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm just going on what the service advisor is telling me, so he or she might not be communicating it effectively. :)

    Got her back yesterday afternoon.

And clarified with the mechanic... the cylinder was actually slightly warped which let the oil through. No overheating issues. It just started randomly doing it as the car got older, definitely noticeable after 80K. The guy said he's seen other models do the same thing, yet Toyota hadn't included the Prius in the oil consumption TSB like the others. (The other Toyotas use a different engine, but the problem is the piston assembly when it comes to their oil usage.)

Here's what Toyota Financial paid for:
    11400-37140 Block, Short 2236.60
    04111-37315 Gasket Kit, Engine O 251.21
    00295-00103 Oil Pan 16.40
00272-SLLC2 Super Long Life Cool 42.86
    04152-YZZA6 Replaceable Element 5.41
    5 0W20 Oil 32.90
    Labor: 1770.22
    Grand total: 4355.60

Good news is that I have at least a 12 month warranty (unlimited miles) on the engine now, even with 500 miles left on the Toyota Financial warranty. By that time, I'll know whether to trade it off or hand it down to the teenager.

this seems a lot different than other consumption posts. maybe cause no one else has pull the head apart?
