It automatically raises and lowers with the hatch, but, well its cheap and looks it. I guess this is the level II cost savings, but I miss my Gen 3 prius sliding cover- more robust and rolled up out of the way when not used.
The one caution I have for new Gen 4 owners is: WATCHOUT for the lower front corners- lower and even more vulnerable to parking bumpers and curbs when parking!!! I only have about 100 miles on the new Prius, and will report more soon as miles accumulate.
PS: Did not like the no spare idea. I did get a great price on mine- below MSRP out the door with all costs incl tax and reg!

Nice write up.
Bad news about the low front corners. The Gen 3 was already a problem in this respect. It's a pita most times I need to park at an angle to a curb which is quite often.

Thanks. Yes, it's presumably a matter of one function (aerodynamics) over another (durability). No matter how careful one is, there are curbs and parking stops that will damage the front Prius corners- true on Gen 3 worse on Gen 4.

I had a low car before (not a Prius) so I don't think the parking will be an issue for me. Also, the 4 touring does have a cover that rolls out of the way. I didn't check out the back of the 2 or 3 to compare the cargo so don't know where the difference starts/ends.

I have posted elsewhere on this site that to me it is reminiscent of a mischievous angry catlike creature from Japanese animation (see work by Miyazaki such as the "cat-bus" creature "Totoro"). The designers responsible for the latest iteration are IMO, influenced by such cartoon character "aggression". In said animation, these aggressive, angry characters only appear that way. Most truly possess a gentle nature hidden behind the angry facade. They are most often fierce AND kind, angry AND gentle, and sometimes at first in many narratives, misunderstood, but when finally fully realized- have a deep-down integrity, gentle countenance and undeniable "goodness" at heart.
