    We have a WINNER!
    Fuel efficiency is just another option like the audio, color, wheel covers, seats, trim, e.t.c. There is no 'pay back' on those options and neither should one consider fuel efficiency unless you are driving more miles in a year than the average. For a taxi or delivery service, it is a no brainer. For road warriors who live in fly-over states, it should also be a no brainer.

    Come to think: tanking up once a month, and only half a tank at that, it's pretty OCD to envy further mpg increases.

    It should in theory. I think past archives still need cleaning up, but the new team seems to have made it less confusing for new car entries. Still depends on owner putting the car in the right category.

    edit: Just check Fuelly, and the different Prius trims, including Eco and Touring, are selectable when setting up a new car entry.

    I am happy to report the TIS (techinfo.toyota.com) has the new car features. Apparently available since the the middle of November 2015. Regardless, I'm in and hope to share details as I understand what I'm reading. One early bit:
    • Models:
      • NiMH -> ZVW50
      • LiON -> ZVW51
    • USA Models:
      • ZVW50L-AHXEBA
      • ZVW51L-AHXBBA
      • ZVW51L-AHXGBA
      • ZVW51L-AHXHBA
    • Transaxle: P610
    Yes, there is a boatload of information. More later.

    And the transaxle has received a major redesign, replacing one of its two planetary gearsets with conventional helical gearing to reduce the number of gears in mesh and to reduce frictional losses by 20 percent.

    NOTE: The 2016 Prius 2 has the Hi-MH battery.
    The 2016 Prius Eco 2 and above have the Li-ion battery.

    I strongly recommend buying a 30 day, $75 access to TIS because just the New Car Features along are huge. For example, I've printed the index of the New Car Features, 17 pdf files with 25 links to technical article groups. Within these groups are 3-10 links to technical articles that are 2-10 pages long, worst case estimate, 20,000 pages. The complete, 2016 New Car Features are larger than any reasonable 2-day, access.

    Now my interests are engine, transaxle, and power electronics. Other pages might be interesting but only after satisfying my curiosity. Please don't ask for machine readable copies of the technical content. what you can and read them yourselves:

    I'm curious about whether they say anything about the Prius Two Eco and what makes it get better mpgs but I don't have time to try reading that material myself right now.

    Sad to say the New Car Features is the Reader's Digest version of technical information. I've started looking in the repair manuals but not found a hard table of Level 2, Level 2 ECO, Level 3, Level 3 Touring, Level 4 or Level 4 Touring equipment lists.

    Emission systems is where to look if there is a drive train difference to the Eco.

    I'm thinking the "optional" in the New Car Features might have been an earlier draft. It would be nuts not have it in all models.

    Toyota Industries Corporation (President: Akira Onishi, Toyota Industries) has developed an electric compressor, DC-DC converter, rear inverter, and AC inverter for hybrid vehicle use. These products will be installed in the new Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) Prius.

    Hopefully a true sine wave. Most inverters develop square wave energy because generating a sine wave requires a bunch more components and is harder to do. A square wave is filthy rich in harmonic energy and this has adverse effects on some electronics. So, lets hope they do their engineering well and produce a sine wave inverter.

    the 1500 W AC inverter is also used in the MIEV power box which retails at $1800 usd - The MIEV is an all electric car in Japan... couldn't find anything on whether it output a sine wave.

    At that price, I'd expect at least sinusoids, if not waves of pure Q'i that not only power your house but also evolve all your houseplants into sentient beings.

    I am pretty sure that before long, there will be one of these 2016s in the hands of someone who (a) has an oscilloscope, and (b) posts on PriusChat. :)

    Any news on the ECO Lithium Battries weight vs the Nickle Metal. Lithium must be 75-100 lbs lighter to get the higher MPG.
    Will both Battrie Packs last as long?

    total car diff is 60 lbs i think. both batteries should last similarly.
