On our 2010 Prius after the first click you can still fill to the brim with nearly 2 extra gallons. I know this is not good but if you want to perhaps make 800 miles on a tank you could probably do it with 2 extra gallons on board....
I've found this true depending on the pump I used, seem some pumps faster cause a faster back up in tank neck causing first click. The only was I can see finding true filling is fill all the way up to neck and the next time use the same pump with car sitting in same position. Maybe someone else has a better way to get true fill up. Merged I have also found that the same pump will pump faster at times.
I never go over 350 miles, I give myself a 40 buffer to find the next gas station, no I don't trust the float in the tank on a 10 year old car, I fill up the same way every time at the same pump and some weeks I go 140 miles on the first section of the gauge other weeks I go about 80
that's fancy I just use the spare tire well as a axillary gas tank, I keep 12 gallons in a trash bag back there and add as needed, 1000 miles per "tank"
Why? 3 weeks ago, I drove over 700 miles in one day... from Wyoming, clear across South Dakota, to the metro of Minnesota. There was no desire whatsoever of not stopping for a break. Taking time to get gas was welcomed. You need to refresh after so much travel. For the situations when you don't drive that far in a single day, what's the big deal stopping for gas from time to time? 700 miles is quite a bit of local travel.
Just got my 2016 yesterday. Most of the reviews i saw that did distance drives reported the same, that they were actually hitting more towards the 60mpg mark. My Prius was showing 52.x with 12 miles on it when i test drove it. 100 miles later it was at 57.5. Another 100 miles it was showing 58.2. since filling up it's showing 60 (mostly freeway driving at 65-75 with an occasional 80mph). That mpg is out performing epa estimates seems VERY consistent with everything i've read and all the reviews I researched. The magic number seems to be in the 58-62 level. Will report more with manual math after a few tanks... oh forgot to mention.. after my fill-up - the computer reported my "fuel range" as 828 miles (72.4mpg avg)... LMAO... i couldn't stop smiling! NOTE: my manual says the fuel capacity is 11.4 gal.
Toyota has been known to under state their EPA numbers. Unlike some other manufacturers, yeah,, I'm looking at you Hyundai and Ford!
Even Road and Track averaged in real world driving 56 mpg with a 2016 Prius 4. See Road and Track Magazine March 2016...
This is from todays freeway driving. About 62mph average, no traffic and a few hills. I probably would of got near 70mpg without the hill
