Featured Hyundai IONIQ - Prius competitor?

    thanks man, we escaped with 5". i'm just not interested in all this epa/euro/korean mpg stuff. no one knows anything, they just make stuff up as they go along, like they're all experts. i'm happy to wait for the real world mpg's after they go to market.

    The Korean numbers just shows that Ioniq will likely be a direct competitor to the Prius for those looking for a high fuel efficient car. The Insight2 was a size class smaller with the Prius c, and the C-Max MPG was too low.

    I'm happy to wait, though. I just wanted to point out that we don't know the fine details of the Korean test. Just enough that the Ioniq will best the gen3 in combined, but not enough to tell how it will measure up to the gen4. Also want to remind people to be careful about confusing what a company says, and what some third party outsider says.

    Troilbait - Several pages back I suggested that eventually a writer will directly compare the new hybrids (Prius, Ionic, Volt, C-Max, Bolt and others). I think it will be very revealing when the specifications are revealed/compared, especially interior dimensions, but also weight, length, width and etc. B. Wilson has already compared the ICE and electric horsepower of several.

    When I made the initial comment, I mentioned that I suspected Prius would have the more favorable measurable stats (power, performance, fuel efficiency), but the exterior would be it's short suit. Admittedly a subjective opinion, and other do and will disagree. The Malibu has now appeared, and it is a very good looking vehicle, as is the Volt. It will be an interesting year. Personally, I'm watching the Ioniq EV. It just may be a perfect city vehicle to complement my Avalon hybrid road car.

    Specs and every other possible feature are all already known all over the world, and officially declared by Hyundai. For Korea, the only market where you can already buy it, even price, FE, trim list and options.
    The FE, beeing directly linked to the national testing procedure and trims, keeps a degree of secondary uncertainity when you want to compare to a possible EPA figure, as elegantly resumed by Trollbait few messages ago.
    I think i'll prepare for our italian forum a simple scheme of the specs as soon i have the time to spend. I'll post here, given your interest.

    Maxwell61 - You are more than likely absolutely correct, however, all I have seen was in Korean and the few specs I have seen were metric.

    Your offer to post specs sounds good. I had been thinking something along the lines of a visual sheet like the auto magazines do, but even a chart would be great. A listing of the interior dimensions for several competitors, as well as performance would be appreciated.

    Mention has been made of the Ioniq's rear seat low head height. From the images I have seen, I suspect the Prius rear seat will be short as well. One picture even made the leg room look short. The G3 had such a spacious rear seat. Every time someone rode in the rear sat, I'd move the seat up and they would say, no need, there is plenty of room. I have seen interior volume stats, but head and leg room are more meaningful to me.

    Side view gen III prius and ioniq are very similar. Interior space TBD. There is a post up above comparing ioniq's guesses versus prius gen III and gen IV specs.

    Both use atkinsonized (atkins valve opening strategy, on otto engines) I4 gasoline with cooled egr and peak thermal efficiency of 40%. prius uses port injection and 1.8L for 105 ft-lb of torque at 3600 rpm and hp of 96 at a higher rpm. The ioniq direct injection and 1.6L for 108 ft-lb of torque $4000 rpm and 105 hp @5700 rpm. These are very similar. No 0-60 for either car that is yet official but expect the gen IV prius to produce max power of 121 hp and get to 60 around 10 seconds, the hyundai probably produces around 20 more hp and may hit 60 around 9 or 10 seconds. Neither is fast or very different from each other.

    Both gen IV prius and ioniq are very aerodynamic. Weight of ioniq in the US TBD.

    Hyundai expects to sell 77,000 ioniq hybrids, phevs, and bevs world wide in 2017. Toyota expects to outsell the gen III from last year which was 113,000 just in the US. Toyota's phev has no date, but we can assume it will be out sometime this year or next and compete. That means neither hyundai or toyota expect the ioniq to sell anywhere close to the prius world wide. This would be the best selling electrified hyundai though easily outselling the sonata hybrid, kia soul, tucsson fcv, etc.

    The main complaints seem to be cramped back seats, noisy engine and lackluster acceleration. Hyundai says the HEV version will hit the U.S. stores in Q3, quickly followed by BEV. The PHEV will be last, probably by year-end. I hope they are priced as aggressively here as in its home market. The low price and lifetime warranty on the hybrid battery should attract some attention. By the way, we will learn more about the Kia Niro (a "crossover" rendition of the Ioniq) at the Chicago Auto Show next month.

    You're bit demanding Felt :) I'm sure US friends can help converting dimensions metrics and comparing to Prius 4, they are very close, with the Ioniq slightly wider and a few cm shorter; Same declared CX of 0,24.

    Anyway, march is close and the Ioniq for US market will be officially presented at the New York Motor Show.

    Thanks to Austingreen to provide the link to Wayne Gerdes discussion , i've missed it.
    It will be relevant to see Wayne's hypermiling tests on the Ioniq, because the EPA ratings don't tells us the whole truth. Different architectures could bring different hypermiling possibilities, just see how small is the gap in EPA ratings btw Prius gen3 and gen4, and how largely are improved the possibilities of hypermiling the Prius IV.

    Nice I now see 141 hp for the ioniq combining motor and engine. The motor hp decreases above 2000 rpm, and the engine peaks at 5700, so peak is somewhere in between those two values.

    I didn't see the weight, lots of information in those specifications. If it is around 3000 lbs, then 0-60 will not be much faster than the gen IV prius (or gen III for that matter) as the hsd applies more power at the start. Passing power should be much better than in a prius especially if a driver shifts before passing.

    BECAUSE I'm an old fart, I remember when Japanese cars were just about where Hyundai is now, and I'd have to say that If the "Rhymes with Sunday" company puts this car on the street in a PHEV flavor, I might be officially interested.

    A PHEV with a lifetime drive train warranty, at a decent price, and with Govermint kickback money to boot?

    Yeah.
    I'll look at an ugly grill for that!

    About the weight, it's 3109 lbs with 225/45R17 tires and 3042 lbs with 195/65R15 tires (Korean specs).

    176in long with 106.3in wheel base
    71.6in wide
    57.1in high
    and has a cDa of 6.81sqft.

    The new Prius is:
    178.7in long with 106.3in wheel base
    69.3in wide
    58.1in high
    and has a cDa of 6.71sqft.

    Both have a cD of 0.24.

    About the warranty, I think the lifetime is just for the hybrid battery. The powertrain is the usual 10yr/100k.

    Thanks. Everything is almost exactly like the gen III prius. Amazing. The gen IV eco may have lower rolling resistance, but it should be similar between the normal gen IV and the ioniq.

    The ioniq's transmission should be more efficient above 30 mph, the prius's bellow 20 mph.

    Gen IV prius might be slightly better off with the ioniq's engine and battery, but they are very close to the gen IV.

    Both are 0.24 cd with the frontal area of the ioniq only slightly higher.

    Interesting numbers. Also interesting, in the video above, the narrator said the rear seat was more narrow than the Prius, when in reality, the car is a bit wider.
