2016 2 ECO and 4 along with 4 Touring come with the Tire Repair Kit instead of a donut spare. I feel this is a controversial move by Toyota. I am sure this has been discussed in other threads. I created this poll to simply determine how much interest or disinterest in these particular models since they do not come with a "donut spare".
they do come with jack and lug wrench. i purchased a spare and keep it above decks when going out of town. i would do the same in the future.
will be selling mine immediately thru craigslist or eBay, i would rather have conventional Tire plug repair kit, no TPMS damage.....
I updated the poll to allow those who would purchase a plug kit and carry it along with a air pump to eliminate any possible TPMS damage. This item may be controversial in itself.
Meh - pretty typical these days. Our Tesla has neither spare nor patch kit - 60k+ gets you just a phone number and a good-luck pat on the back.
Reports I've read say the goo won't damage the TPMS sensor. Oh, and lots of new cars come without a spare. But at least you can buy a Prius with or without a spare. Your choice. Don't see the purpose of this poll.
Well, it's not like you can pick any level, and then the salesman asks: "and what would you like, a temp spare, or an air pump with sealant". You're basically stuck if you want a particular level, and it doesn't come with spare. If that was a poll question, if you had an open unfettered choice, do you think anyone would opt for the pump with sealant?
i think it depends on the goo. and yes, it would be great if each package came with a spare option. makes no sense the way it is being done. i understood on the pip, there just wasn't room.
If it's similar to 3rd generation it'll do. The main criticism I'd make is that the linkage to the extension rod is piss poor forged single eyelet. The rod dances around with every revolution. It's not dangerous, will get it done, but frustratingly poor design. The main comment I'd make would be sure you have a pair of wheel chocks along, to chock the diagonally opposite tire per the owners manual instruction.
especially if your jacking the rear, there's a lot of play in the tranny, even on flat ground. a little movement could shred the oem jack.
Our 2003 Prius has a Harbor Freight, mini-shop jack . . . a clever trick I picked up from @tochatihu many years ago. So I had this spare scissors. I found a bolt with the same dimensions as a lug-nut (not a standard size) and had it welded onto the crank tang. Now the lug wrench can raise and lower the car and I don't have to deal with that flimsy, wire crank tool. One part eliminated and the lug wrench now has two functions. Bob Wilson
'Nother thought: even if you're jacking up a rear corner with the scissor jack, there's still the other side rear corner on the ground, and with the parking brake set it's still secure. Coupling this with wheel chocks though, is better.
I am not doing the survey because undecided is not an option. But I like the idea of donut spare or collapsible spare. As soon as I get a second I am going to calc actual ft-3 of the donut spare. 6-inch height good (per below) with 22.5-inch diameter = 1.5-ft3 excluded by spare ...about half of the 1.5-ft3 is semi-usable space inside the donut for accessories. If I understand the cargo volumes in Japan specs it is 457-liters (spare) vs. 502-liter (no spare) which is 1.58-ft3 suggesting (somewhat hard to imagine) there is not additional space lost by adding the spare. In other words, if you stash a donut in the 2eco hatch, you will be ~460-liter, not accounting for good use of the donut inside space.
I understand that the "height" of a 15" donut spare is 6". That measurement kept me from pursuing one to stash in my storage area.
yes, it does take up quite a bit of important real estate. if i needed to load the hatch for a long trip, i would make a plywood cover so you can stack on top of it.
Short of hitting something big enough to shred a tire or damage a rim a 12 V compressor will get you home. Unless you live in a rock fall zone, work in a quarry, or run police barricades your probably only going to encounter the type of road debris that cause slow leaks.
