Brake code C1344 and warning lights!

    I keep getting the C1344 and all the lights. I checked and changed the rear shoes and the light keeps coming back, although not immediately. It takes just a little while.
    I didn't notice any signs of leaking fluid, though I was able to squeeze the LH wheel cylinder in pretty easily by squeezing on the top of the shoes. The drums were not scored and were in spec so I didn't turn them. I never cracked any brake lines loose.
    Any ideas of what I can do to figure out what's going on?

    Hi greasemonk,

    How are you reading that code, and is the car you're talking about the same one in your profile? I'm just asking because you're posting in the Gen 1 forum and your profile says 2001, but the 2001 brake diagnostic codes are on pages DI-358 and DI-359 of your manual, and C1344 is not one of them. Brake codes stop at C1259 for that year, C1344 seems to have come in with Gen 2.

    If your car is a G2 Prius, C1344 is the actual code being logged, and you don't see any hydraulic fluid leaks, then the brake actuator assembly probably needs to be replaced.

    Sorry about the confusion. I've updated my profile to reflect my recent upgrade from the 01. I'm checking with techstream. I plan to try bleeding the brakes tomorrow. My helper could have loosened something up when he changed my pads. Just curious if I can do the bleeding procedure with techstream if it comes to that. I'm just going to bleed at each wheel tomorrow to see if that helps. I was a little surprised at how easy the LH wheel cylinder pressed in when I tried to squeeze the top of the shoes. It's got me wondering if it could be bypassing on the inside.

    GreaseMonkey, were you able to solve your problem? I am also having a problem with code C1344 coming up repeatedly. Although my situation is different in two ways:
    1. My car is a 2004 with 199k miles and has not had any brake system work in years.
    2. I've been getting this code for about a year or more now. I would reset it and not see it for several months. The it started coming back more frequently...once a month, every few weeks, and now I can reset it and it comes back on the same day.

    Frequency seems to have increased as the weather has grown colder. Coincidence? I have no idea. I appreciate any thoughts or advice anyone can offer.

    Sadly, I have put it on the back burner for some time now. I did try to bleed all 4 brakes by cracking the bleed screws. All fluid, no air seen. For some reason, I could not execute the brake bleed command from Techstream. I tried 2 or 3 times and gave up. Too many important things to do. I plan on changing the rear left wheel cyl. just for kicks and giggles and see what happens. I don't know why I couldn't execute the brake bleed from Techstream though. That did kind of aggravate me.

    Here's a little update for this pest that I've ignored for over a year. I recently took my car in to the dealership to see if they could figure out what was going on. They decided to replace my actuator pump since it was covered under some extended warranty from Toyota. Lights stayed off for a whole 20 miles! I was all excited to have a new pump and no brake lights on but it didn't last very long. So I took it to another dealership and had them bleed the entire brake system. The lights came on when I started the car to leave the dealership. So I just took it back and had them check it again.

    They found no leaks anywhere and nothing that needed to be replaced. They did find the left rear brake out of adjustment. There was surface rust on the inside of the drum and no brake dust at all. Imagine that! Not sure how that happened but somehow it didn't self-adjust. I was skeptical that adjusting the clearance would keep the lights off but knock on wood, so far so good. I've been about 100 miles in the last couple of days. No sign of trouble yet!

    Hi @greasemonkey007 . May be (hopefully) you're still around. I've got the same issue on my 2006 Prius with same code error C1344. I went to my Toyota garage, and they want to bleed the entire brake system or they want to change the ABS actuor, witch is of course not the same price...
    I try to tell them that I read your post and that may be the rear brake that is out of adjustment. But they told me that this break was mechanic and no hydraulic, so there is no link to this problem and no link with ABS.
    So, I just wanted to know if your problem came back after they adjust your rear brake.

    There are 5 INF codes (that you can get from the freeze frame data if you have a good code reader) that will help narrow done the diagnosis a little, but I think your mechanic might just be right. The likely problem areas are:
    • Fluid leakage
    • Brake actuator assembly
    • Disc rotor
    The disc rotor as a possible cause depends on the INF code you have.
