Hey all, Have a 2015 Prius and want to add a hitch for a 1up bike rack. Can't decide between a 1.25 and a 2" hitch. Leaning towards 2" torklift but the Curt 1.25 is still in the running. Considering 2" since I may want to expand to 3 or 4 bike capability either on the prius or on my 4Rnr. Have been going thru all the various threads but didn't find answers to the following questions What is the 2" ecohitch class rating? How many bikes (max) have folks put on the back? Anyone with a 2" have any clearance issues? I saw in the Torklift install video that they remove the plastic protective covering and didn't re-install. Does or will that cause any issues (rust or corrosion or dirtier parts) down the road? Any other tips, thoughts or insights appreciated!
I have the 2" & would recommend it. I have only towed a 6x12 aluminum trailer so I can't speak to the bike rack question. Clearance issues in relation to what? In hindsight I would've waited to cut the under car plastic after the hitch is installed. I followed the directions & removed too much in one area & didn't need to remove a section at all that the instructions claimed I needed to.
Just clearance issues like hitting the hitch when going over driveways or speedbumps, anything like that.
This is with a Curt 1 1/4' receiver using the single plus add-on 1UPUSA...2' might be better for up to 4 bikes, but my Son only uses the hitch to carry one or two. My experience is that a larger vehicle might be more appropriate for 3 to 4 on the hitch...but I have also hauled 2 different small U-Haul trailers with it. The only real problem I had hauling thier trailers is you need a 6" up hitch, with the 2" easier to find locally on the spot than the the 1 1/4"...but I found one after a few calls. The final decision comes down to tow rating and usage...with the Prius only capable of Class I/II. Do expect your MPG to be cut in half (at least) if hauling a trailer on the Interstate with any weight though. 2010 Prius Hitch Receivers and Bike Racks | PriusChat
I too have the Curt 1.25 hitch and I have regularly loaded 3 bikes on a 3 bike rack. Works perfect as far as I am concerned.
No issue. If you look at the back of the car from a side profile, the bumper cover would hit/catch before the hitch would. At least on the ecohitch version.
