I've had 3 Toyotas with built in GPS but my Prius C is absolutely terrible after Toyota replaced the original head unit things seemed good.... but here we are again and it j is worse than the first time My GPS will be fine then fly itself 20km away and show me going in a completely different direction. i bought the technology package because I wanted the GPS and it is a dud and my dealership claims no one else has these kinds of problems. i just dont believe my little C is that special
well I posted about the original problem last year... they finally replaced the head unit after fiddling around and resetting etc. then it worked for a while and now it is worse than the first time because now it doesn't know what direction the car is travelling in I'm in Metro Vancouver Canada so no Entune either
we are having one of our warmest winters on record. we've had some snow flakes fall twice so far and my car is kept in a semi heated garage...
When they replaced the head unit did they also replace the GPS antenna? I know most antenna are pretty simple and there are really no electronics in them, so this may be a long shot. Also, does anyone know if the head unit has the GPS module built into it or if it is a separate system and uses the screen for display only?
GPS operates by a satellite technology, and if there is any interference then it can go bonkers. Are you driving near high voltage, or drilling, or construction areas? There have been a few times my GPS did not know where it was. It was around construction and ships in port, a lot of freighters where navigation is used extensively. And why not check the antenna, it can't hurt. When it gets confused I stop the car and restart it again to reboot the nav and then it corrects itself. It freezes sometimes too, giving way to interesting detours.
So I have been using GPS systems mostly for work and surveying applications since 2003, I.e. I am very aware of typical GPS problems, limitations and interference. also very aware if software related that can affect performance of GPS locations being provided. In other words, the problem I had was not normal behaviour and normal GPS drift. It was up to several hundreds of kms it would drift to places where there are no roads. Toyota replaced the antenna and did a soft reset if the software and this did not work. They replaced the head unit and finally this problem was fixed for me. Never had it since. My 2013 prius c GPS has never again disappeared off to the US or gone by itself to the mountains when parked at my house or decided to jump 300km to some random river like it was doing before the head unit was replaced.
Mine has only done this three times, the first I wasn't able to record, the second I was driving the freeway, and the third I was parked at my destination and asked it to take me to where I was parked, and it was definitely not right... Once I've been a member of this forum for the customary 24 hour wait period, I'll post the video links here, respectively...
YES this is similar to one of the earlier problems I had Almost like the compass was "broken" and I would turn right but the GPS would either go straight or go left!!!!! It then got worse where the screen would suddenly change and my car would be 200+km away from me!!!
2014 Toyota Prius C4 | PriusChat That's a link to the thread I started, so you can see the advice I received... Since mine has only happened three times to date, I'm not that worried about it... However Toyota was notified of my experience...
