Dealer Extended Maintenance Package worth it?

Someone did the math on this and the answer was no.

All you need are oil & filter changes. Does that price include inverter & engine coolant drain & fill? (Probably not.) Does it include wiper blades? (Probably not.) What's Toyota's recommended maintenance?

The dealer's nK Service Schedule is designed to improve their cash flow. What are they actually going to DO or is it just a bunch of inspections?

 

Well...if you've done the math and it will save you $50 bucks, it will save you $50.

Then the only potential disadvantage is that you are tied to the dealership for maintenance.
If you're happy with the service? Then that's not a problem.

Is the extended warranty specifically through that dealership only? Or is it a Toyota plan and transferable to ANY Toyota dealership?

Either choice you make, I don't think the costs are going to be significantly different. You are kind of just deciding whether you want to pre-pay for basic maintenance.

 

i would want to see specifically what they will do at each interval. if it is what toyota recommends in your maintenance manual, i would take the 50 dollar savings.

You are saying it's $50 cheaper just to pay for recommended maintenance as it happens? Individually?

If that's the case? Why buy the extended service plan?

Also you should give some thought to transferability of the plan if it has any value if you decide to sell or trade in the car before reaching the end of the plans coverage.

I think I lean towards just pay as you go at this point.

My vehicle is at near the same mileage, and the "Toyota Care" has expired. I don't plan to extend it.

 

one downside is if you hate the service, you're kinda stuck with them. i mean, what if the donuts are stale?

 

I made up a spreadsheet of the US schedule some time back, just taking what's in Toyota's documentionation, no embelishment. Here's a summary of what's involved, the highlighted region:



So what's involved, IF they're semi-conscientious, and ignoring the "fluff" (with my guesstimates in brackets):

2 engine oil and filter changes ($60x2=$120)
4 tire rotations ($25x4=$100)
1 in-depth brake inspection ($200, IF they're halfway conscientious)
1 engine air filter replacement ($30)
1 cabin air filter replacement ($30)

It really depends on what they intend to do for the brakes. If they're pulling and inspecting the pads, checking disc thickness/runout, and relubing the caliper pins, it's a good deal. I'd ask what they intend to do, especially regarding this brake inspection.

If the response is a lot of "50 point inspection" and "fuel injector cleaning", just back away.

 

It's not a good deal. Both of my dealers have it posted -- if you add up the full price cost of the services you save a tiny bit. Here is the problem. If the car is sold or totaled -- you loose the unused services. I never go to my dealer for an oil change without a coupon -- so I get it cheaper? The free inspection covers almost the whole 30k service at my dealer with the oil/air filter deal. I remember asking about the two brake inspections -- the more advanced one is simply looking at every wheel and removing a tire if you can't see the pads (my local independent doe that anyway)

 

I hate to ask what the less advanced one is.

If true, that dealership should lose their license.

Well -- What would you consider "inspect brakes" . It's a visual inspection. They walk around and look?

The more advanced is to actually measure the pad and spin the rotor.

and if you not mind going under the carriage and do your own oil change and filter, save your money with that dealer offer.

 

30k is probably a good time to clean and lube the rear brake slide pins in ohio. see nutznbolts thread, video and others advice. the dealer is not going to do this unless you pay them extra.

 

not really. some people have trouble with them seizing up and locking the brakes, but most don't.

i use mobil 1.

 

Whatever is on sale and/or has a coupon--Valvoline, Mobil1, Castrol...
