Wheel bearings failure.

If there's a next time I would disconnect the battery negative cable: it's risky having the calipers off the disc, it's too easy to open the driver's door (for example), have a caliper piston pop out.

 

Yeah, I am just guessing about that based on the feedback here.

 

He had it up on a hoist.

 

There may be other triggers. I wouldn't want to discover them, lol.

That's interesting, live in the land of salt,ice and snow.. my wife's gen 2 with 90,000 miles ( 140 km) has original bearings... 2012 PIP has had both front replaced in the 30 to 40 thousand miles (50 to 60 km) under warranty.. hmm
