Regular RAV4: $27,255. The Hybrid comes in AWD-i. The price you quoted ($24,990) is for the FWD LE. AWD LE starts at $27,255. To further that, the RAV4 Hybrid starts at the XLE trim level. Looking at the brochure, it's pretty much feature-to-feature. The Hybrid gains exclusive rain-sensing wipers. The regular RAV4 AWD XLE $31,650. The difference is $2,850 (minus whatever the cost of rain-sensing wipers)
$2850 is about the difference for the rest of Toyota's hybrids, and it is still a sizable one for many.
A $2850 premium (or more like $2700?) seems reasonable for hybrid. BTW. Too bad our Canadian dollar sucks so bad though at the moment. Here is another review, published by The Globe and Mail. So RAV hybrid is only available in AWD? That 6.9 liter/100 km City rating is kinda underwhelming. If they offered a hybrid in FWD, that'd surely improve, price could drop, and maintenance would be easier to boot.
I look at the hybrid premium on the Prius as compared to the Corolla. Though not exact either, the CX-5 is a close apples to apples comparison.
I suppose I was going more for a fuel economy close equivalent rather than size with the cx-3. The Mazda's do very nicely on fuel, though. My sister's CX-5 AWD 2.0 isn't too tough to get to 33 mpg overall.
Yes only AWD. I suspect if there were a FWD model the price premium for hybrid would be higher. BTW, the fuel economy at 6.9 L/100 km is about as expected, and is decent for AWD IMO. Remember that it is 7.1 L/100 km for the Lexus NX 300h, which has the same engine.
The Hybrid AWD is nothing like any other AWD, so comparisons mean nothing. The rear axle is electric only.
Yeah, that wasn't taken into account lol. I usually am reasonably close. I've followed Toyota for long enough to get a feel for it. The 2016 RAV4 lineup went up in price according to the exchange rate. The 2016 Highlander prices are also up by $1,000. No but most hybrids won't be taken off-road. It's meant for light-duty AWD needs.
I'm interested in an AWD RAV4 for the all weather nature on-road & the theorized reduction in "burnouts" from briskly accelerating from a stop to merge with traffic. That happens a lot when I'm at an intersection & the concrete swale has water/wet leaves/mud/dirt/etc.. which causes a delay, then traction engagement/tire slip/oh crap moment am I going to actually move forward in time moment. That and the higher entry/exit height.

The MotorTrend article is interesting, but I sure get tired of reading articles written by folks who know little or nothing anything about hybrids.
That is interesting but also impressive. It's 1L/100km more in the city and practically matches the highway rating of the Camry Hybrid. This despite it being less aerodynamic, heavier and with AWD-i. Note that in the photos, it's showing the XLE model with the aerodynamic-looking 17" alloys. The 18" alloy Limited might fare a bit worse.
Just traded in my much loved prius for a rav 4 hybrid xle. First 30 min driving impression: It's amazing! I like the sound system, blind spot alert, lane change etc. all the safety features. Also liked when it beeped when I drive into my garage and was about to hit something!
I looked one over a little today. Got to say I was unhappy to see the big bump in the floor behind the rear seats. The opposite of a flat floor when the seats are down. Makes the Prius-v look like a flat floor. Very little under-deck storage too.
