    That would be reselling which is considered piracy and is highly illegal. Not that I care... just wanted to throw a heads up.

    How big is the manual? How long does it take to download all at what internet speed? And what do we need: Standard, Pro or Security?

    Greetings, i also seek this tome of prius 2013 c dealer service manual. Does anyone want to PM it to me?

    I have no problem paying for a printed manual, but artificial scarcity needs to get bent.

    There does not seem to be a haynes manual for gen 3 either... whats up with that. Just got this car and its mint.

    I suspect they didn't get around to making a PDF for the c, probably the same story for v.

    I've got 2nd gen Manual, which is well done, seems like it started out as a printed manual, and it shows in the organized/complete format.

    I also have 3rd gen, get the sense they still produced a printed version but just barely, we're relying more and more on online access.

    4th Gen I've got a "cobbled" PDF someone put together from online. Lots of info, but presentation really suffers.

    its funny because if you go through the tutorial on how to use the TIS system, they just look like PDF manuals that have been converted (encapsulated) in a stupid flash site. Flash is going to be dead at the end of this year so i wonder how they will deal with that then.

    If i could scrape all the pages of the manual i would pay for 2 day access but thats a lot of work. Especially if someone already has done it. First car i ever bought where there was no factory service manual available on ebay. way of the world these days i guess.

    In past I've always bought a paper Shop Manual (for various Honda vehicles), around $100, paid for itself the first time you set up the valves.

    It doesn't use Flash at all, and the older manuals that were converted into the system are indeed PDFs. So are most of the things like TSBs, quick technical guides, and so on.

    The later manuals that were born in TIS are straight HTML and PNG images, very web-standard stuff. The wiring diagram uses a bunch of SVG and JavaScript where you can follow circuits around, pop up connector details and locations, and so on; if you haven't used it, you're in for a treat.

    As far as 'artificial scarcity', I doubt that the paper and printing were ever the biggest part of the cost before. The people who can write good technical documentation, and translate it from Japanese, aren't artificially scarce, and neither are the yen used to pay them....

    The artificial scarcity is locking up information (your limitless resource) that costs you nothing to distribute electronically, in order to generate a profit. Thus creating an artificial scarcity of information.. But i dont really get that motive, a giant auto maker charging 20 bucks for a few days access.. they cant be making much off of that... doesnt make sense in any way. and that there is no haynes manual is bizarre as well. But i tend to drive beaters generally and never had a toyota before.

    If i owned the manual, as opposed to renting it from toyota, i would be happy to throw them some money. Currently it seems that market is being filled by ebay and shady sites. If i do come across one, does it break the TOS of these forums to post it? is that why no one is doing that?


    I have been doing ok with this forums and youtube, so far. Additionally I found the below site when i was poking around today. It has many diagrams, and i can kind of work backwards for some things.

    When I bought my 2001, I opted for the paper manuals: the two volumes of the repair manual, plus the NCF manual, wiring diagrams, and (out of curiosity) collision repair, and got the lot from Toyota's Materials Distribution Center (that was before they outsourced the paper manual distribution to Helm,Inc.) for under $300 if I remember right.

    If you go to Helm now and look up the paper manuals for 2011 Prius (the last year for which they did paper repair manuals), the Repair Manual alone was up from two volumes to five and would set you back $961 if all five were still in print, and figure around another $200 for the wiring diagrams and about as much again for the NCF. So you could be out the door for under $1400.

    Or, you could drop twenty bucks for a couple days access to all of that, in a less bulky form, up to date with corrections, plus all technical service bulletins, all recalls and service campaigns, all quick technical guides, the course materials for University of Toyota technician training, and the manuals for all of your friends' Toyotas (and Lexuses, and Scions).

    Nobody has yet managed to wave a wand and make complicated technical documentation appear without people being paid to write, illustrate, and translate it. But they are making it available on fairly practical terms.

    One suggestion that I wish they would take from me would be to have an affordable option that isn't the full run of the whole library, but only the docs that pertain to my model and year, but let that be a one-time payment and include an easy way to download them and refer to them offline. Honestly, the thing that bugs me most about the current setup isn't the cost per se, but just fussing with the credit card when I just want to look something up. And if the car breaks down in the boonies somewhere, I would like the ability to refer to the manuals without internet.

    If you do much reading on this forum, you will see that in lots of threads, somebody who has downloaded relevant parts of manuals will often post a portion that directly helps with somebody's question. Different members make their own judgements about how much they feel comfortable posting that way; somebody may directly post a whole section in pdf, while somebody else may copy specific paragraphs and illustrations. Your profile location isn't very specific, but in the US anyway, there is a "fair use" defense in copyright actions but it isn't something with a clear-cut definition. It comes more or less down to how would you explain your decision in court if asked, and would your explanation pass the giggle test.

    For my part, I leave my TIS subscription lapsed most of the time, and now and then when I have stacked up enough questions I'd like answered, I'll feed it another $20 and go through my backlog. This forum can usually tell when I'm doing that because for about a two day period, a lot of my answers to other people's questions will be coming straight from the manuals. :) Other people chip in when they can, and the community sort of works.

    I have never seen the admins of this site ding anybody for the kind of reasonable reposting of relevant portions that mostly happens here. I have seen larger collections now and then get posted, but those seem less likely to stay up. This site's admins have a pretty good relationship with Toyota, it seems, and I am sure they would rather not strain that.
