Dealer Service Bloatware?

Deliberate error is very common. For instance some of our IC's report the internal die temperature to the outside world via a digital interface. We can accurately measure the temperature to 0.25C (1/4 of 1 degree Celsius) over the entire range of -40C to +125C. When we report the temperature back to the user, it is usually fudged. If it is near the hot end of the spectrum, we add a little bit of "error" to the offset to make it read hotter than it is. When it is cold, we make it report a little colder than it is. Closer to room, it reports most closely to what it really is. "Variable offset", "deliberate error", or whatever else you want to call it, it is making something very accurate less accurate because in general people do stupid things when presented with limits.

 

Apparently the computer is calibrated correctly to the tires, because the OBD2 is accurate to within 1%.

So can anyone answer me this: Why should the speedometer report a speed which is 5% off from what the computer knows to be correct?

 

Apparently no.

 

Interestingly, the adaptive cruise control on my Advanced seems to use the "correct" speed. If I set the cruise control to 64, the speedometer says 66, which is close to 5%.

 

Glendale is kinda of an upper income area, so I assume, the dealer was taking advantage of that fact.

Two things:

1) I've owned 2 different Prii, a Gen II and a Gen III. Neither has suffered a dead 12V battery after sitting for a week or more. And yes, I've tested this multiple times.

2) The speedometer display error is 2 MPH above the actual speed. Not 5%. I.e if you are going 62 MPH in reality, it'll show as 64 MPH. If you are going 30 MPH, it'll show as 32. This is consistent amongst all Toyotas I've owned/driven (5 so far). And the speedometer error will have no affect on the odometer readings. If you go 100 miles according to the GPS, you'll go 100 miles according to the odometer. The only way this will be thrown off is if you use a different size rim/tire combination from what the odometer is calibrated for.

 

Cabin Filter change, $7 bucks, do it yourself .... Glendale has way too many GREEDY Toyota Dealers.. Hybrid Battery Service, not mentioned in my owners manual ... This is one of the reasons I dumped Prius, another was North Hollywood Toyota, what a feces hole!

Pretty much any business based in Glendale, CA is significantly more likely to be crooked than businesses in other nearby areas ... for reasons that will be apparent to most who visit Glendale.

 

You must be referring to the enormous concentration of a certain ethnic group.

Definitely ripping you off. Pay them $80-100 to do an oil change and tire rotation, and buy the cabin air filter and engine air filter on Amazon and replace those yourself (search YouTube for instructions). Out the door for well less than $150.

 

That's a vast improvement. Where did Toyota ever get that idea? Other car makers should do that! That's absolutely brilliant.

 

they were able to accomplish this by greatly reducing the size of the inverter.

 

The inverter changes DC to AC to drive the front wheels, the loads the same. So I assume the inverter is MUCH more efficient? It was really never a question of room, 12 V battery may only take 5% of total space, if that much. Design engineers can do almost anything, if not limited by other depts.

much. well, if you look in your engine bay, finding space must have flummoxed even the toyota engineers.
but if it wasn't room, maybe it was balance.

 

I think it was just an excuse because they KNEW they screwed up. Some years later they put the battery under the rear seat ( Prius C ) they could have talked to VW about that.
