I know it's close, if I remove the battery of my main key the car still flashes the key indicator. How far does it detect the key?

I think you're talking about that red key that flashes on the dashboard. That's not telling you that it's detecting the presence of a key fob. It's telling you that the "security system" is on. (I put security system in quotes because it's not really a security system. It's the ignition lock if I remember correctly)
I think if it was inside, the car'd be freaking out everytime you go to lock it. I lost track of one fob for a day or two. When I finally found it I put luggage tags on both fobs with phone number and email. Also taped the same info on the locking lug nut socket.
I still haven't any luck. I'm looking for a replacement. I found an exact model version on ebay: Toyota Prius Smart KEY Keyless Entry Remote FOB | eBay But I called Toyota and they say it must have been used in a Prius with the same production batch, so that the computer is the same. Should I try the one on ebay ? A new one is soo pricey (320 CAD$). I found numerous posts on PriusChat about programming a key ourself. I'm fine with VirtualBox and any software preparation I would need to do, but I still have not find a procedure from A to Z, it's not complete here: I found that I can buy a brand new key: TRANSMITTER for 2010 Toyota Prius|89904-47150 That's the first step. I'm still willing to try the used key.
