I have a 2004 Prius that has a ticking noise coming from the engine compartment It speeds up and slows down with the idle of the engine or the pressing of the accelerator. Appears to be coming from the passenger side (US). No diagnostic codes have come up. Any ideas?
Just watched Hook. Has it ticked its last tock? Regular engines it would be valve tick but a Prius is not a normal engine. How many miles on it? Mine has a very quiet tick at 66K. If everything else is good drive the wheels off it. It may not be hurting anything else. Also check your accessory belt.
you can pick up a low miles engine for cheap, if it becomes too annoying. are you burning any oil between changes?
I have essentially this same clicking noise in my 2007 Prius, due to the winter weather here, I haven't gotten a chance to properly record the sound but once I wrap up with classes in a few weeks, I really want to get around to recording the noise and posting it on here and getting some feedback. Originally, my mechanic said it could be the bearing (my noise is very obvious from the front passenger side too), but the noise only appears when I accelerate pretty heavily, otherwise, when I am going downhill, or on a flat road slowly accelerating you can't hear a thing. For me, the car though doesn't act funny in any way aside from this clicking noise.
Hey, so I am almost done with finals Once I have a clear day, I will record the sound from my 2007 Prius and share. Just out of curiosity (and not trying to hijack this thread), but how much does a Prius engine replacement cost? My current mechanic does the job of course, but just curious how much the part, and labor would cost. Of course, I'd imagine it being done at any Toyota $tealership, it can easily ring up to four digits...
If it doesn't smoke and your filter is ok as well as the PCV valve if it has one????? Drive it another 100K. Any heavier oil will hurt your MPG. If it is really cold you might want to consider 0w30 or 0w40. And go back to 5W in the summer.
