Programming the garage door opener ?

Does your garage door opener have a rolling code? Many of the new ones do. If so, the instructions are somewhat more complex. If not, it may be that you didn't hold the button long enough when programming. I had that problem the first couple of times I tried. Also, you have to hold the button for a second or two when opening; just tapping the button won't work.

No, you have to keep going. I had the same trouble. I thought I had it when it flashed slowly, but if you keep going it will flash fast and then stop. It takes a little time.

(In addition to what Tom said above) With my garage door, I have to hold the HL (HomeLink) button on the Prius rearview mirror for a second before the garage door responds... just pushing it and letting go doesn't work.

ALSO, my garage door opener has a button in the back called "Learn". All I had to do, to program my Prius Homelink, was hit that button (at which point an LED on the garage door unit flashed) then run to the Prius and hold in the HL button on the rearview mirror. After about 3 seconds my garage door light bulb flashed a couple of times to let me know that it had picked up the Prius signal and the programing was complete.

 

In addition to what the others have said, try changing the batteries in the garage door opener then try programming the Homelink again.

My dealer programmed the Homelink for me, but with me sitting right there. From what I recall, he held the garage door opener a couple inches from the Homelink/mirror (aimed the opener's LED directly at it), then pressed the first Homelink button in and held it there while simultaneously pressing down on the garage door opener button, until the red light on the Homelink/mirror flashed. It worked well, but I do have to hold in the Homelink button for a couple of seconds for it to open the garage door.

We just did this last night for our 3 garage doors!

My house was built in 2000, so it is the new rolling code type.
Had to:

Press & hold remote & homelink button about 2 inches apart until homelink light flashed slowly and THEN quickly.

Press LEARN button on garage door opener itself.

Press homelink button again 3 times (holding it each time for about 1-2 seconds). The 3rd press actually opens (or closes) the door.

Voila!

Now all 3 buttons in my car work!

 

I've also been completely unable to program the garage door opener. I assumed it has something to do with the fact that our garage door opener is about 25 years old, but still working perfectly.

Anyone know if there's such a thing as "too ancient" for home link to support?

I had similar issues - 2006 Prius, built in 11/05. Followed the book, word for word. Finally gave up, and used the garage door opener from my '99 Dodge Caravan. Had a brilliant idea - went to my garage door opener's web site (I have Chamberlain opener) and downloaded the user's manual for that particular opener.

LO AND BEHOLD! There were - TWO - SLIGHT - differences between what the Prius manual said and what the user's manual said. I followed the user's manual - and it worked!

As several others have noted, you MUST hold the button on the rear view mirror for two full seconds (one thousand one, one thousand two) to open and close the garage door. I had to retrain myself, since the original opener requires only a tap of the button to activate.

I was able to get mine programmed but only by pressing the button on the opener itself, not using the remote. It is nice to have because now I can give the remote to my son so he can get in the house when I am out driving around in the "Little Red Montster". "Eating up the road but not the gas"

 

SHORT HOMELINK DISTANCE.

I've just programmed my HomeLink but find that the range is only 6-feet whcih is clearly not useable. I've tried orienting the garage door opener's antenna both horizontally and vertically, and even tried extending it, but to no avail.

Has anyone else had this problem? Could it be a problem with the Prius' HL transmitter?

Same here. It was easy for my home, but not at my parent's. When I read the garage door opener's instructions it said there was TWO ways to learn. The second one worked fine.

Mine works from about 250 feet away, at least that is how long my drive way is and I can start opening from the road. You might have someone look at it when you are next at the dealer. You do have to hold the button down for a few seconds unlike the tap that I used on the regular remote.

Mine works from at least 300 feet. In fact, the range seems to be farther than the range on the actual remote.

I followed the instructions in the manual, and it worked the first time. I did not replace the battery in the remote (as they suggest).

My garage door openers are less than 3 years old. Genie, with rolling code.

 

I'm using a LiftMaster garage door opener with rolling codes and an '06 pkg. #8 Prius. After spending a few frustrating minutes and combining the instructions from the Prius, my dad's '02 Escalade EXT with homelink and the PriusChat forums (inluding the very helpful above link to HomeLink FAQ)...

1) Turn on the "Lock" feature on the garage door opener wired to the wall (if available) so the door will not be going up and down.

2) Have your normal garage door opener transmitter in hand.

3) Press and hold the desired HomeLink transmitter button on the Prius for about 30 seconds and the red light will go from solid to slowly blinking.

4) Now hold your transmitter close to the mirror, press and hold the button that corresponds to the opener you are trying to program to until the red light on the mirror blinks faster, then release all buttons. To see if it worked, press the same HomeLink button and hold it for a few seconds. If it was successfully programmed to a rolling code transmitter it will blink fast for two seconds then go solid.

5) Next, Have someone climb up a ladder to the garage door opener unit and have them locate the "Learn" button and an LED near it.

6) Have them watch the LED while you press and hold the HomeLink button in the Prius. When the LED on the garage door opener unit begins to flash, press and release the "Learn" button and the lights flash on and off, then you can release the button in the Prius. It should work from there!

 

you absolutely must have FRESH brand new batteries. Even 1 day old won't work (sometimes) - my prius one works way better than the old handheld. From the end of the drivewway

 

I had to go through the 'press and release every 2 seconds' routine with my rolling-code Genie. It did not work with the 'hold down and wait' method. Once the button was programmed, I put my wife in the car and me on a ladder to program the receiver to recognize the remote. Before I started I used the lock switch on the opener wall switch to keep the door from obeying my every command.
