I spent 10 days in SoCal a month ago and the average for reg. gas I noticed was $3.60-$3.90 and that was driving all over from San Diego to LA and inland to North county a few times..

Of course there were a few ultra high priced ones I saw ie. Del mar exit of I5 which is known as being ridiculously high and a few up in Hollywood area that were over $4 but....

Are you saying the average in SoCal went up well over a dollar in the last 4 weeks?? If so that is a shame.

It's been holding steady at just under $3 here the last month in the country's most heavily gas taxed state of PA. Head to Dirty Jerzey or DE and it cheaper..

The converse to this reality is that I think buying a newer used Prius can be a really great deal.

In fact, if I had to do it over again I think that's what I would do.

Buy when fuel prices are low, sell when fuel prices are high.

While the price hasn't risen a whole dollar, it has risen a lot, and all in just the last ONE week, since July 9.

Go to Gasbuddy (Historical Gas Price Charts - Los Angeles Gas Prices), and pick cities of your choice. LA has risen $0.76, San Diego $0.74, statewide average $0.46.

There were some refinery issues in February that shot prices from $2.50 (Jan 28, 2015) to $3.50 (March 16, 2015). Current recent prices in the SF Bay area are $3.50 - $3.70. My June 26 price was $3.50, my July 14, price was $3.64.

Those numbers sounded familiar to a recent check on my 2013 Honda Civic LX sedan. I rechecked at my miles 14k and condition very good, since excellent is such a low percentile, and private party was very close, $14,486. When I changed the miles to match your number value was $13,410. The original sticker was just under 20k, but due to step incentives I paid $16k, Jan 2014. The used Prius value is apparently suffering the same as new prices, with >$4k off currently. As has been said, now is a buyers market and 2 years from now if gas prices are back up, your car value could be up. That could be likely if the world economy has recovered. If Prius values typically fall faster than most, it must be tied to prorating to the eventual battery replacement.

I saw an article not long ago about used electric vehicles deprecation being substantial, even after considering the tax credit. Quick check of a 2013 Leaf shows $9k price. Not sure what the charger would cost.

i wonder if you can actually buy decent vehicles for these projected prices. i don't see many people here getting great prices on used.

Audi's in general are unreliable, especially the A6. I have a Q5 and already had to take it in for oil consumption issues and it's only little over year old. I had the q3 for a week and drove it hard and when I returned the Q3 it sounded like it was dying.

I've done very well over the years buying 2-3 year old cars and driving them for many years. I got a great deal on my 2013 Prius and plan on keeping til it's 10 years old plus.

well considering you can get a brand new 2015 two for under $19K, $14K is realistic for a 2 year old one with 35K+ miles

That's pretty normal. I quick look at a 2013 SUV with similar mileage shows similar depreciation.

I took my 2011 with 65k miles to Carmax last weekend and got an offer of $10,000. I'd say that's pretty good considering miles and the toyota dealer is selling new ones for $18,700.

Most vehicles are selling this much off MSRP. If you didn't do your due diligence then that is on you.
