Best brake pads for prius v??

Considering most get over 100k miles on their brakes, I would go back with OEM.

 

If they use the same quality pads as all the other Toyotas, I'd never buy anything else. During the last 30 years, I've never replaced brake pad at less than 90,000 miles on any of my Toyotas. Same with struts and rotors. Yes, they cost more.

 

To clarify, I have no experience with the Prius pads. But the earliest I've ever replaced Toyota pads is at around 90k. It's an expensive brake pad an rotor job when you need it, but they last like crazy.

 

Yup. Regen braking does the bulk of the braking under normal conditions, w/ Pads kicks in under 7MPH, as regen stops at this point. Hard/emergency braking will cause the pads to kick in soonerto supplement regen braking.

Many Gen2's get well over 100K miles. I'm at 132K miles, and on original front pads & disc rotors, and rear shoes & drum rotors. Plenty of friction material on everything and the rotors are still plenty thick too.

Prius brakes in UK seem to made of a softer material as they don't get the same crazy life US Prius owners do.

Be sure to have the brake caliper pins lubricated on a regular basis. People who don't do this report new pads and sometimes rotors b/c a caliper pin dried up. The result is the braking power is concentrated on one pad and on one side of the brake rotor. Obviously unwanted uneven wear.

 

I have 162 k miles on Gen 2, and all original brakes.

151k....and original rads and rotors on my 06........SUV.

My work car (2010 Prius) has 76k and I don't think that it will be needing brakes before something like 200k based on current burn rates.

Unless you drive in bumper-to-bumper traffic for hours a day, or deliver the morning paper I can't imagine needing new brakes on a Prius before 150k.

I have a Prius V and my brakes are down to 2mm after only 34,000 km. Rotors shot too.

 

Our 2012v Touring has 112,000km on it. I inspected all brakes before we drove down to Vegas this Month they all looked like new, we don't use much salt or sand in the winter in BC...34k km, wow there must be lots of abrasion on the pads and/or rotors.

 

I had my Gen 1 Prius for 12 years and NEVER did a thing to the brakes (except change the brake fluid every few years) - traded it in for a Gen 3 in 2012. The Gen 3 just turned over 100K, still have never changed the brake pads.

 

Now at 175k on my v with original brakes and no dust on the wheels. I normally anticipate stops but not enough for others behind to worry about it. Was just in Europe and Prius v cabs are everywhere.

 

My Prius 2011 hit 70k and I do not have to replace the brakes. The original from Toyota should last for a long time.

 

Define best.
Cost, dust, life, performance?

I vote for OEM replacement.
1) Ceramic - low dust.
2) Cost - depends upfront part cost over the life of the part , DIY install, warranty
3) Life - longer pad life, less rotor life.
4) Performance - stopping distance, heat.

My rears needed replacement first at 190k

 

2015 Prius with 185,000 miles and original brakes and batteries. I will go ahead and trust the dealer on the brakes whenever that happens because there is plenty left on the pads. Bigger issue is probably to clean and lube them up so they don't start sticking or become difficult to remove in 5 more years?

 

I have 240k on my Prius v brake pads and they are still fine. I never changed them on my 2008 as well. Regen is a wonderful thing.

 

Yeah Toyota USA "hints at" a more in-depth brake inspection every 30K miles or 3 years. They go into precious little detail (take a look in the Warranty and Maintenance Guide), but I take that to be where you would lift off the caliper, clean/lube. That's a good interval I think. Our miles are SO low now, it was 3 years this spring for the fronts (ditto for the rears this fall), but I'm gonna let it slide a year.

 

All of our Priuses get 180,000 before the first brake service. Your reaction makes me wonder if dealers have been selling you brakes you don't need...

 

Nobody's selling me anything. I'm just DIY'ing brake service, triyearly, though I am letting that go 4 years now, due to very low miles. Pads have plenty of depth still, but I like to disassemble, clean and lube things.
