How to Program a New Key Fob for Full SKS Functionality

Adding my own thank you to the chorus... 2005 Prius, needed a 2nd fob. Purchased on Amazon, and followed the link on the product page to this site.

I tried process A 4 or 5 times over 2 sessions with no luck. Skipped ahead to process B and got it on the 1st try. (9a - got lock / unlock on first try. 9b - got lock / unlock while doing simultaneous press on new fob. 9c didn't do anything, but probably unnecessary based on 9b?) I wasn't expecting it to work based on my experience with part A, but I went ahead and tested the key, and discovered happily that it worked.

Read through entire thread, then tried part A again. My problem was pace. I had been moving at a quick but steady pace in previous tries. This time I went more quickly and got the solid red signal that I made it into programming mode. Definitely hum the chicken dance song to give a sense of the pace required.

Really appreciate the ongoing support here!

 

New Smart key system fob works great.
Just successfully programmed my new smart key system fob for my 2008 Prius per your instructions. Now New fob has all the same functionality as my older fob. Dealer had quoted me over 100.00 and an hour of my time just for the programming. It took me just about 5 minutes to complete the task with my only hiccup being I accidentally missed a step in my first go round.

 

I bought a new silver key on amazon from a dealer, I was successful w/ the "chicken dance" to get the key working when inserted in the igntion by using the old key to program. My issue is my old and only original key was water damaged and no longer powers up (no red light on button press) so am unable to do Part 2 of the Chicken Dance.

What are my options w/out a working original key to get SKS/keyless working?

I'm thinking I'll have to program via software, correct? I'll probably buy the techstream usb adapters and try to get the SKS/key less entry working again that way. Only a ~$20 investment. Local locksmiths/ dealers in Los Angeles seem to want from 75-120 to attempt to program, one dealer wanted > 300!

Any thoughts? Or if anybody knows where I can get this done in L.A. for less

Thanks, the old one came back to life in terms of the red light indicating when buttons are pressed but the car no longer recongizes it for keyless or SKS still. I put a new battery right after it happened a few months back and it was the same way after i had it in rice for a few days.

 

When you press the "lock and unlock" on the old fob, does it lock and unlock the door now? If yes, you can use that old fob to program the new fob

Can you elaborate on how the old fob came back to life? What function(s) did you get back?

 

Well it lights up when buttons pressed but no longer works w/ the car for keyless and sks. still works in ignition though, just as before. the car doesn't respond to it when trying to add the new key fob to the car at all either. unfortunately think need a working keyless/sks key to do part B of the chicken dance. I may try to buy the software for 18.99 on amazon and add it that way as another posted seemed to be able to do.

 

They were clicking, and it only lit up when pressing. The remote had already seen a lot of use by the time it got wet and the plastic was coming off above the switches. I agree and think it's fried.

SusanS's post indeed helped me. I bought a new sis key from a dealer and had just replaced my battery in the old FOB. I went through part A with no problem, but then with part B I went through your instructions twice and got stuck on 9 as well. I am pretty sure speed was the issue as well. Right after reading SusanS's post I just tried to do it with her easy to read instructions which I think helped with speed. The final lock cycle happened within seconds and was sweet music to my ears. No chicken dance needed!
This thread was great for two reasons. 1) The basic desire you have to help people usnavystgc is just great. Thank you! but 2) Also being a great moderator for this thread to keep it on task. It was probably the reason I was able to get it to work so quickly. Thanks for being there for the rest of us! This saved me about 200 Canadian dollars (which has about the same purchasing power as 200 US dollars these days).

One other thing I wanted to note. The dealer that sold me the key tried to tell me that you could only try programming it twice and that if you made more than two mistakes your car's programming could lock down. Clearly after reading all these posts this was not true. I think he was just trying to discourage me from not paying them, but this dealer is not normally like that. Anyway, just thought I would put that out there.

I'm trying to replace my FOB, but I've run into a snag. I have a new FOB and have not tried the Chicken Dance yet because I've been researching this process. In doing so I realized that Procedure B, Step 9a is where I'll get hung up. My Lock button on my old FOB is not functioning at all. I've viewed several youtube videos on "How To" fix the stuck button and cut my old fob open to try getting it to work and ended up with nothing but a cut up FOB. So essentially there's no way for me to complete Pro.B, S9a because I cannot successfully "Press and hold the Lock and Unlock key (simultaneously) on the OLD/MASTER fob", unless anyone has other suggestions..?

So a few questions come to mind.. Is there a way to program the smart key functions without an existing FOB? How do people who lose their FOB get new one's with the Smart Key Function? Is this a dealer only fix?

I've skimmed this thread for possible answers, but didn't see anything. Sorry if this is a repeated topic. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

 

I have a 2008 Prius that I purchased used. It had only one SKS key. I ordered a new key from a Dealer in Pennsylvania. I couldn't get the new key programmed for start/stop in Procedure A. I got the red anti-theft light to go on and then put the new fob into the slot and it began to flash but never stopped flashing. I waited for 5 minutes. I tried it from the start again and the same thing happened.

Anyone know what might be causing this? I measured the new fob battery at 3.0 volts.

 

OK, I tried it again but this time I opened and closed the door 6 times very quickly and it worked. Step B was a breeze and now my new SKS key is working perfectly. Thank you for posting this procedure. You have saved me and many others a lot of money.

FYI, I purchased the key from York Toyota in Pennsylvania on ebay for $104 with free shipping.

 

I am at the last step of procedure A where the new FOB is supposed to be programed but the red anti theft light wont stop blinking and cannot continue. I bought the key in Amazon as new from reputed seller.

When I first bought my 2005 Prius used it came with on key fob that had sks functions. I was able to unlock door and start the car while the key was in my pocket. Eventually that stopped working even with fresh batteries so I thought it was the key fob because the fob was in terrible condition. I bought a replacement fob with the silver Toyota logo and programmed it successfully with the method in this thread , but still no sks functions. Everything else works with new key though. Any ideas?
