Thanks, keydiver. Now I want to drill holes into my car and hook up PS2. Then I'll be able to play few rounds of game during lunch hour.

Ah! I'm glad you solved it so simply. We (well, Keydiver) already has that figured out as well. There are some cryptic notes on the bottom of the same "anytime reverse camera" page that discusses it. Eventually I'll have pictuers and instructions on that page. But if you can do the camera thing, you can certainly do the input thing.

I like what you did to activate the back up camera and I am amazed how easy it is. I wanted to know it there is a better camera available. Maybe one that was not so fisheye but just a regular camera so that you could get a better perspective of what you are seeing.

Would this be a correct schematic for the anytime camera mod? I just want to make sure because I'm going to start my version of this mod based on this schematic.

Yup. Looks perfect. I should probably include a smaller version of that line drawing on the how-to page.

Feel free to use my schematic. If you need a smaller and maybe a different color version just let me know and I can make a few changes. I just got kind of lazy on the one I posted. I did not think anyone would want to use it.

Here is a better version. I whipped out Electronics Workbench and Photoshop to do this one. :D

Hey this anytime camera mod sounds pretty pointless and challenging - just my kinda project! :)
I was planning on doing an EV button install anyway, so maybe I can do it all with a single dash disassembly.
End result will be new toggle switch and momentary contact switch side by side in the (formerly) blank cover plates of my 2006. If I'm gonna void the warranty, might as well go all the way! :D

I have a couple of questions though:

    1) Are you techies disconnecting the 12v battery first to avoid potential shorts during install? Would this have prevented the blown fuses mentioned in earlier post?

    2) Seems as though just about any 16-22 gauge stranded wire would work, but what type/gauge of wire is recommended, and why? For the EV mod, I recall 22 gauge being suggested. Was this to accomodate the stock crimp-on pins? Seems awful thin, but if thats what works best, who am I too argue?

Thanks for all the great tips and advice - keep 'em coming.

My kind of guy! That was my attraction too. :)

You'll have to come up with something else - like crushing the car, maybe - neither of these is gonna void anything.

Not a techie, but I'll answer anyway. I did NOT disconnect the battery, though I should have. It may have prevented the blown fuses... but then I didn't disconnect OR blow any fuses, so you take your chances.

It doesn't really matter what gauge you use for any of this stuff. The runs are quite short and you aren't carrying any real current. I used what I had, and it was something like 20 gauge for both projects.

I have a feeling that the guy above who blew fuses had the MFD powered up while doing the install. Otherwise, I can't imaging how he blew any fuses. Everything is so easy to get to.

I think I just used some 22 gauge audio cable I had around, but just use what you have. There is NO current to speak of on the wires, so I don't think the gauge is important. Just use whatever fits the connectors you are using to splice it in.
I might mention that while you're at it, you may want to do like I did, and incorporate another switch to kill the speed sensor input to the MFD into the backup camera switch. I used a double pole, double throw, center off switch from Radio Shack. The bottom position is "Normal" (speed sensor still connected), the center position interupts the speed sensor wire, and the top position is as shown above, to complete a circuit to the "backup" input to the MFD. This allows my wife to scroll through the songs/folders on an MP3 CD while I'm driving.

Pretty good thinking! And which wire was the speed sensor again????

    Beautiful!
A complete trifecta of electrical mods (EV, camera, and speed sensor)!
Probably best to complete and test one at a time to simplify any troubleshooting.
Other than the speed sensor, would there be any problem with testing EV switch and camera activation prior to dash reassembly? Can't think of any, but haven't been inside the dash yet either.

Keydriver - got a RS part number for that switch?

What are the other implications of speed sensor deactivation? Has this been covered in another thread?

From what I can tell, if you have NAV there is another purple wire to disconnect at the same time for the speed defeat. Can anyone confirm this? The combo backup / speed defeat switch is the first mod I'm going to do after I pick up my prius tomorrow. Assuming both purple wires need to be switched, that'll probably require me to do two separate switches (unless I find a double-pole-triple-throw switch somewhere).
Thanks for the ongoing info, keydiver! (and all)

The speed sensor wire, from what I've seen, is always a purple wire. But, of course, there is more than one. There is a purple speed sensor wire to the MFD, which restricts you from certain operations on the MFD while the car is moving, a purple wire to the stereo to change the volume level as you go faster, and then there's the purple speed sensor wire to the NAV ECU, which is under the seat I believe (I have a Package 3, so who knows).
I only covered the MFD one in another post.
    http://priuschat.com/index.php?showtopic=17495
The NAV one is covered in some other ones I've read. Theoretically, you could find the spot where all the speed sensor wires converge, and interupt it there, and kill all the birds with one stone. (but I wouldn't really do that)
I just looked at the wiring diagram: a purple wire leaves the combination meter on pin #13, goes through a connector, changes to a white wire, then splits 2 (or 3 if you have NAV) ways, all puple wires. If I ever have the dash apart again I'll try to find that split.

OK! So we switch the purple one that's right next to the pink one here, yes? Just how many more mods are we gonna find back there? Do they make 5-way switches? :)

You could put in a selector knob instead of a switch. That should take care of any extra mods. :)

I love GEEKS!! What part of any of this voids the warrentee? I didn't get an extended, just what came with my Pkg #3, is what I have.

I've had my car a week, and have had three different friends suggest how awesome it'd be if they (we're all computer/video geeks) could see out the backup camera ALL the time... so here we are... I REALLY want to do this, but does it f*ck the warrentee?

    GEEKS rule always.

    NO.

Welcome to PC, btw (oops, I joined a few days after you). Welcome to Prius Ownership. ;) The question of warranty comes up about five times a day around here. The short of it is that NOTHING can void the warranty unless what you do screws something up that you then want covered. There's no such thing as a modification that can simply void the entire warranty.
