I register with Fuelly but to my knowledge at my second fuel up with 286 miles traveled I got an mpg of only 33.6 but the computer on board on every trip I made it showed an average of 46 mpg.Trips were made at 90% city and 10% highway. At this point I do not know who to trust on the mpg, fuelly or the prius v computer.
Fuelly is correct. The Prius calculated mpg is always optimistic. One fuel up isn't a whole lot to go on. See how it goes for several more tanks of fuel. FYI, use the odometer reading to enter into Fuelly, instead of miles traveled. Sometimes the dealer resets the trip meters when the reset the maintenance required light after an oil change. Or you may forget to reset your trip meter, etc.
Ignore all the MPG displays except the one that shows instantaneous MPG. Each fill-up varies with the way the nozzle is inserted and the sensitivity of the sensor that controls the shut off. The meaningful results will start to show up over a long series of full-ups. I've seen a 30 MPG variation when doing a fill-up and the shut off is premature and the reading is extraordinarily high. But the next fill-up is low in the other direction. That is why fuelly is giving you odd readings. Input odd data and you get odd results. Note my average below. Low of 34, high of 72. But the average is what counts and on that fuelly is very useful. I've been remarkably consistent most of the fill ups, just two pairs were wildly different.
Just also realized that my tires were all inflated at 30 psi instead of 35 psi for the front tires and 33psi for the rear.I went along and corrected that,I guess when I got the prius from the dealership I took it for granted that they inflated the tires at the proper level, one lesson learned.I might just get little bit more mileage next fuel up and thanks for all your replies.
Disclaimer: Not a Prius Comment Tires; always check your pressure. My father in law got a Dodge promo van from a dealer and told me a week later he wasn't sure he liked it as much as his last one because it rode rough. The low tire light kept coming on too. I checked his tires for him and one was 25 psi, the other three were 60 PSI. YIKES!!! If I were the one airing them, I would have been worried about exploding. Some dealers leave a lot to be desired. A big fan of DIY here!
Trust but verify, a good policy for mpg calculations as well. Dashboard readouts are nice as is fuelly but all you can really trust is an odometer reading, a pencil, and paper.
I love fuelly, I have it set so I text fuelly and within a minute or two, it send a text back with my mileage.. The onboard computer pretty much tells you nothing. (At least it was next to worthless with my '13 Jetta TDI)
I love Fuelly too! I have not seen an on-board computer work accurately yet. I an hoping my new(used) Prius computer will be close as she has not had her second tank from me for calculation.
I'm consistently averaging 350 miles to a tank full is that low enough to considered I might be having some issue that needs to be checked out ?
Fuelly is spot on with its calculations. On my CT it's at least 7% optimistic. I ignore all the readings except fuel range and odometer. Last one Fuelly gave a calculation of 61mpg. I'm pleased with that. iPhone ?
let's start with some data. 1) history of your ownership, when you bought and what you were getting for mpg's. 2) when you noticed deterioration and the progression to current mpg's. 3) any changes made to the vehicle or maintenance done. 4) how many miles when you purchased, if used, history before that, how many miles when you noticed mpg's going down, and how many miles now.
Owned the just about a year or so 350 is about the average miles per tank full sometimes a little more some times a little less best being maybe 375.00 All maintenance is up to date oil changed when I first bought it and again after 5k miles Vehicle had about 15k miles when I bought it about 23k miles on it now new Bridgestone Ecopia EP20 running at 42psi The vehicle is still under warranty The main question I have here is are these number bad enough for the dealer to deal with it under warranty ????? I've tried not to deal with the dealer unless necessary usually a run around
Markee - an obvious number missing from your complaint about miles per tank is this: How many gallons are you putting in the tank to fill it after those 350 miles? If you're only putting 7 gallons in it then you don't have an mpg problem. There are many threads about how inconsistent the Prius gas gauges are in terms of "miles per pip". You may still have a lot in reserve. What shows on the gas gauge when you hit that 350 mile mark? Many of us follow the advice of the senior members here and fill up when the gauge hits two or one bars. If you're interested in getting a higher total number out of each tank you may just need to get it down to one "pip" and then figure a certain number of miles after that. Personally I don't care to take any chances because I know I would have to fill the car in another day or two anyway. Whether I fill it today or tomorrow doesn't make any difference to me. I just fill it sometime between two and one "pip" and I not only know I will never run out of gas locally but if I'm on a long trip I have plenty in the tank to get to the next town.
I'm averaging 9.5 gallons per fill up using it till the fill up bar starts blinking and then maybe going another 20 - 30 miles at most and getting 350 miles per tan full 90%+ city driving So my question really is do these numbers show some kind of real problem worth taking it to the dealer before my warranty runs out ?
I say, why not take it to the dealer? Tell them that it is not getting the advertised MPG. Prove it with your fuelly records or whatever log you have kept. You are obviously in a flat and warm environment being in Florida. It cant hurt to see what they have to say about it.
