:D It is. I dont know about you, but my area is saturated with salvage yards (live in Metro Detroit - the Motor City!). I love that site.

Most consider 60k more than adequate, given Toyota rates it as a "lifetime" fluid. That reminds me, my wife's 2nd gen is due for another swap at 125k miles - I did it once at 60k and the fluid looked very much like the OPs.

I call "bull"on lifetime as well - I've listened to many 2nd Gen Prius taxis in Seattle, and more than once did I detect a PSD that's suffering from original fluid with a notable MG1 (or PSD) whine as they accelerate up hills, etc.

I've got over 95,000 miles on mine, I can get a sample of it when I pay to have it changed if anyone wants to pay for the analysis.

I figured I'd do it at 100,000 miles when I change the spark plugs. Might be a couple of months for me to get to that milage.

Plenty of time to order a sample kit and wait for it to arrive.

Strange but in UK/Europe the hybrid system guaranty does cover the MG's.

    Great post.

But is that because our warranty is comprehensive (car and hybrid system) upto 5 years and/or 100,000 miles? So it makes no difference which section of the warranty the claim is made.

In the US I believe they have a 36k mile car warranty and the 100k or 150k hybrid system warranty. So I guess it's whether you class the MG's as hybrid or transmission. They class it as part of the transmission and thus only covered under the car side.

The gen2 in the UK has 5year 60k miles car and 8 years 100K on hybrid components.

You are close to two great, independent hybrid repair facilities that can do the swap if needed: Luscious Garage and Art's Automotive.

Unfortunately it looks like I've had a MG blow on my 2007. I had the 100K extended warranty, but it's now at 102K. :(
The dealer is quoting $5500 installed. Car-part.com does show some used ones in the Phoenix area, but I'm having trouble finding someone to install it. Most of the places that claim to work on hybrids really mean they'll do the non-hybrid system work on hybrids.

Perhaps a transmission specialist can do the job?

I think my transmission might be going too. It squeels when it's cold like a bearing might be going out. It depends on the engine RPM and I think it's MG2. My car is still under warranty until April so I'll see if I can get the dealer to reproduce the problem again before the warranty runs out. It's been going on for a couple of years now.

I don't understand why any competent mechanic would refuse to do the transmission swap on your car!

MG2 is not affected by engine revs as it is connected via the diff directly to the wheels. So is affected by vehicle speed not engine speed. I would carefully check the water pump belt, and idler pulley, followed by the pump it's self.

Can you tell me HOW your get the trans fluid changed?? One garage says they don't ever touch it. Another says they'll try to top it off it needed after they replaced the halfshaft asssemblies. There is no dip stick to check it. I have a 2009.

you simply open the fill plug, open the drain plug, replace the drain plug with a new washer, fill until fluid comes out, and replace the fill plug with new washer.

in the case of topping up, remove fill plug, add until it comes out, replace fill plug with new washer.

That does seem unusual. To me, the most basic components of the hybrid system are the battery, and the motor/generators. If the MJs aren't covered by the hybrid warranty, what is? Just the battery?
