What occupied the space and can it be removed?

Just speculating: a different plethora of plastic and Styrofoam shapes, tailored to suit a compressor and slime kit.

From the pictures Rick took, the shape of the foam boards are very different.

Yup...that was my first thought weeks ago when the 1st cargo plane spy shot came out. But when I tried editing those photos it just grew uglier. I like this one better, it kinda looked like the Matrix which I like. Personally I like hatchbacks better than sedan.

My wife's 2015 Outback doesn't require this. The TPMS will continue to blink since the spare doesn't have a sensor.

So they also took away the storage tray under the trunk floor? Why is Toyota removing storage spaces in Gen IV?

Fiat was the highest I've seen. I think Hyundai was only charging $100 at the same time.
I bet you can just pop that non-spare foam out and the space for the spare is underneath.
Is there enough space around the spare to stuff a set of jumper cables in? That's where I keep my set.
I heard this a few years ago, and it supposedly due to the difference in wheel and spare diameters. It lead to the AWD not working properly and damaging the system. Is it still possible to disable the AWD with a fuse?
Less open spaces to amplify noise?

I, like a lot of people evidently, were disappointed in the Gen 4 Prius release.

But in Toyota's defense, I think most of us OBVIOUSLY are Prius enthusiasts, so our expectations are high. So it might be hard for Toyota to launch a release that would meet what I think most of us would want for Prius and from Toyota.

I honestly would of liked more immediate information, perhaps less smoke and mirrors. Maybe the most disturbing thing to me, is that the release felt very underwhelming, despite being in Vegas, and with all the theatrics involved, it felt rushed and budgeted to me. Toyota has always presented Prius as being one of it's "Halo" vehicles, and the release seemed spartan from that perspective.

But with the passage of a few days?

I think maybe I've been too hard on Toyota. Too critical of the release.

I want to see The Prius in person, I want to learn and know more about it, and the options coming for Prius.

But I'd say there are things I like already. The actual dash display seems improved. Brighter and with more colors. An area, I think Prius and Toyota has been lacking in, for the Standard Prius.

In general, I think I'm actually going to like this vehicle, a whole lot more than I liked Toyota's reveal of the vehicle.

If Toyota doesn't release the Prius by CES, it'll most likely be displayed at CES. I can wait til then to scrutinize the car in detail.

Where have you been? Storage is so yesterday, sporty and edgy is where it's at, lol.

You know you're being sarcastic but sporty and edgy don't always work. Look at CR-Z.

True. I'm bordering on depression over this, don't much care for where Prius is going.

From what I can tell that had to do with older models that had a center diff. and clutch setup. The fuse was for VDC (vehicle dynamics control) or anti-skid. A mismatched tire could throw an error causing the diff. to clutch in/out. Most likely to happen with larger aftermarket tires the off road folks prefer. Those folks who know what their doing carry a full size spare.

The stock "mini" spare on our OB is the same overall diameter as the OEM tires so no issues running it.

Styrofoam. I am with you. If the S-foam can be manually molded or perhaps an after-market tray can be created, I would be interested in that.

The 2016 Prius should have been this which is already being produced.
Auris Touring Sports | Hybrid & Diesel Cars | Toyota UK

Toyota would sell more of these than the Prius for 2016.

Just look how well the VW sportwagens sell. Toyota could have made
billions on this one. Hybrid 55 mpg in a wagon I would buy one.

That's much more better than what we're getting. Maybe a bit too wagony....I would keep the overall Prius shape though

Look at that...........Stretch this out into the Prius shape with the dual rear windows and I would have camped outside my dealer waiting for the PiP. Sharp front end, love the strong crease at the beltline (just like G3), beautiful tail lights, just enough creases and lines without over-doing it. Now I'm pissed...... It's a fine bone china bowl looking thing there in the console. I'm not warming up to this new version, as hard as I try. Instrument display is still in the middle of the upper dash and the info screen looks a tad like Darth Vader's helmet. I've been pretty open to design experiments but this car is giving me a tough time.

Say I decided to buy a Gen IV... every time I'd get in it, this would happen...

Just way too distracting to drive safely... sorry.
