When I owned my Lemon 2013 Altima the same thing happened - I had an early car without the good safety rating, and a few months later they did a revision that had a better safety rating. Most people said nothing changed, but then the new Altima guys realized their weathertech mats weren't fitting the passenger side. Turns out there is an added hump there (structural everyone assumed)......

What IIHS stated the improvement was on "the front-end and occupant compartment structure was modified and the side curtain airbags were lengthened to improve occupant protection in small overlap frontal crashes." Despite top safety pick or not, I enjoys driving this car, which is also my first minicar.
