Time to stop charging my PiP?

Here in Central Florida, $2.08 is the lowest so far!

$2.19 here, but i couldn't be bothered going to a gas station. probably costing me 25 cents extra per charge. that's $90./year!

 

I wouldn't charge if I didn't have solar. Right now with cheap gas I'm averaging about 4.7 cents per mile in my PiP. With electric it's 4.1 cents per mile and that's $2.399 gas compared to 17 cents per KWh.

However, lifetime (since Nov 2014) - my average cast per mile in gas is 5 cents per mile, while electric was 5.3, however, taking into account solar, only 1.15 cents per mile :O Confused yet?

I just put gas in for 2.12 in georgia at Exxon but its still worth for me to charge because I only pay .0875 per kWh

Get ready for the PiP 2.0 ! I really hope the 30 miles EV rumors are true. So far, my used PiP 2012 is still giving me great EV mileage, so I have no idea if there is any degradation at all.

 

This discussion is very location specific and is not generic. We are paying $3.50 and higher here in SoCal and the Legislature is talking about raising gas taxes to pay for road improvements. I have a PIP and fill up about once a month for $25 (I used to spend over $100/mo. with my Escape Hybrid). I support the increase in gas tax - let the Hummer drivers pay for improvements . I have PV on my roof producing excess generation, therefore I plug in for free. I plug in at home three or four times a day depending on my driving needs. Around town, on short trips, I am essentially driving a very luxurious, electric golf cart. Too bad they wont let me take it out on the links!

But your type of situation brings up an interesting point. Why should EV users not pay for road improvements? Why should gas vehicles pay for it?

Ultimately, I think there should be a road improvement fee based on your annual inspection and mileage you run. Then let the gas and electricity be taxless for the consumer (but taxed for the companies...). This would make everyone happy I think, gas will still be a cost of energy that if you drive a hummer will still cost more than a Prius, and people will pay for the maintenance of the roads they use.

Am I wrong here?

 

it's a gas tax, not a road and bridge maintenance tax. if our politicians want to set up a road and bridge maintenance fund, then they should tax by vehicle weight and mileage.

and keep the gas tax for more wars.

 

Until these new-fangled electrically powered cars came along, a motor vehicle fuel tax was a reasonable proxy for a road and bridge maintenance tax. I am sure some bureaucrat has thought of the idea of requiring that plug-in cars be charged only through charging stations that have a meter on them that reports usage to the state for tax purposes. That would solve everything, right?

 

I've come around full circle. Purchased my 2012 Prius Plug In in January 2013. I thought the Prius was so neat, and loved being able to drive all EV to work and home. At one point, with over 10,000 miles, I was at 76% EV. But not without work and frustration. Looking for more, I leased a 2014 BMW i3 BEV last September. I could drive over 80 miles, normally three days on a charge. I was able to run the heat and AC, drive faster than 62 MPH and enjoy all EV, all the time. My Prius became my "other" car. I quit charging, drove it sparingly. In the past several weeks, I drove the Prius where my i3 would exceed it's range. Last week, I had a one day trip of about 200 miles. Driving 68 MPH on the interstate, I averaged 58 MPG. I was impressed. This week, a similar trip, same results. Lately, I've started charging my PIP every time I use it. Made sense before, makes sense now. Regardless of gas prices, I'm still saving money. The PIP is a great car and I plan to keep it indefinitely. I still prefer to drive all EV and I love my i3. Still, nothing currently offers enough EV range at a reasonable price. Always looking for the next great (EV) thing.
