As the title states: What would be the best to get: 1. A 2012 Prius Plug In with approx. 18K miles (City or hwy miles, unknown) ($19,500); or 2. A 2012 Prius Plug In Advanced fully loaded with high mileage (mostly freeway) 75K ($18,000). Both seem to be in very good condition, and both are CARB state cars. I think with the Advanced model: the coolant, transmission service, and possibly the spark plugs service is near. Any thoughts? Thanks
Why would you want a plugin instead of a conventional Prius liftback do you really want to be limited in your mileage per day per trip because you'll only end up having to plug in for an hour and a half compared to the traditional Prius where there is no worries of you losing power unless the main battery goes bad I don't think either move would be a good one when it involves A Prius plug-in it's not a huge seller and that's the reason why if I were you I would look into a 2011 Gen 4 loaded
Thanks for your input. I was checking out the plug in because with their poor sales, a low(er) gas prices, I though I might be able to find a plug in for a nice discount, but as you mentioned, I am starting to see (and noticing from stuff I have read) the plug in premium price over the regular Prius seems to be not worth it financially. I was bouncing around trying to find what I really wanted. It is just the prices are so spread out that it is hard to find out what is a decent deal. I have even considered just buying a new Prius Two ($19,xxx currently - waiting to see if Toyota increases their manufacturers incentives) since they were so close in price of a used ones I see for sale. I may check out a loaded 2011 and above and see what they are going for. EDIT: Also, I thought that if you dont plug in, that car is just like regular prius. .
That is correct, but only better because you have a bigger battery pack than the non-PIP. I have no idea what the poster is trying to say! I'm not sure he knows how a PIP works! You don't have to plug in if you don't want to for some reason. I have never "lost power"! After owning a PIP, I would NEVER consider owning the "standard" Prius model. I love my AVERAGE 70 mpg as opposed to 45-50 mpg in a standard Prius. I love my Advanced Technology package including Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Collision Avoidance System, LED headlights, larger MID, and a plethora of other bells and whistles. However, in your choices above, in my opinion option 1 is a better value than option 2 based on mileage. I was able to find a 2012 PIP with Advanced Technology package with 21K miles. My wife and I fight over who gets to drive..........but you do need to learn a new technique of driving to get those 70 mpg's
it isn't 'just a regular prius' if you don't plug in, it's a prius on steroids! imagine if toyota made a bev that only went 15 miles?
but back to the o/p, 75k is nothing on a prius, except 3 years or so of use. if i don't need that 3 years on the back end, i would decide based on the higher end equipment, and if i wanted them. power seat and plether is the only thing i miss.
Yeah, I don't understand what matt b. is trying to say. From what he wrote it APPEARS that he thinks a PIP only goes 10 to 15 miles and then you're dead in the water! Yes, and I like the steroids part of the extra battery pack. Totally valid points. Yeah I forgot about the power seats and phony leather (hey it looks real to me and environmentally conscious to boot!). Since both my wife and I drive the car, that driver seat motor is getting a workout! And you will never be seduced by the convenience of DRCC in your base model.........I've been on those Boston freeways at busy time! But if I were in O.P.'s shoes, I would continue to look for a 2012 PIP Advanced with under 45K miles for around $20K. They are out there.
