Featured SPOTTED! *UNWRAPPED* 2016 Prius spotted this morning!

you would think so, but i've never been invited, and probably for good reason.

 

I bought my Prius C in March 2012, the year of its debut. Waiting for Plug-in Prius Gen V, Volt, Model 3, and Bolt these days. Toyota is losing the plot. First, the Mirai and now this.

 

So I will pose a question. If Toyota has lost the "plot" then who has it? I really thought the'14 Sonata with its fluidic style language looked great. It says Hyundai. The '15? Not so much, rather plain by comparison.

The Bold Camry is nice but I thought our 2010 TCH was quieter and said Camry. We now have a '13 TCH, Yes it's quiet but not as quiet as the '10 was. The '13 looks like they sharpened the handling and made it "sportier" than before. So as we enter MY '16, Toyota doesn't want to end up somewhere in left field.

The design language of Gen Four Prius may bring new customers (conquest) to the Toyota family. Quiet possibly Toyota did this because they know their veteran customers will come back to them. Its the new customers that keep the dealers going. That might be the case here, Prius has to appeal to more people.

 

Ok, so no 2 year-old can match the temper tantrum seen in this thread from some of the honorable adult members after seeing the photos!.

 

Yikes, that thing is 3rd world ugly. I could understand if it was a Chinese design but WTH Toyota? I bet the 2015's are quickly sold off the lots.

The hydrogen book is getting dusty and the pages are frayed and yellowed. And Toyota certainly risks becoming history if they continue to ignore the EV revolution and spout half-truths about their FCVs and the EV competition.

JTM, a strictly ICE vehicle is simply no longer in my vocabulary. I am up to here with being a victim of the oil cartel, Wall Street speculation, and busybody politicians. I'm of the mind to gut the former while they're down and severe my most direct addiction to oil. Only thing holding me back is finances.

As for aesthetics, I enjoyed the generational leap of the Prius from gen II to gen III because it was an all-around improvement (in fact, there was nothing I liked about the Prius design until gen 3...the improved aerodynamics must have successfully wooed me). I have a hard time visualizing the same here.

But Vinnie97 hydrogen cars ARE EV cars. All they do is swap out the battery and replace it with a fuel cell. Batteries are old and worn out technology. They begin to die the moment they are manufactured and have a relatively short life. Fuel Cell EV cars are the future. I see hybrid as a gap filler as we switch from ICE cars to EV cars.

 

Most of my original comments still stand for me, though I will say that with clearer images the front from the badge up looks a bit better than I thought. Rear is still pretty boring and still not a fan of the big black panel and odd dent in the rear door/quarter panel.

 

You might want to read one of the detailed reviews of the Mirai. The review I read stated that it was the ICE that was replaced with fuel cells; the NiMH battery pack remains - the Mirai is a hybrid. GASP! A zero emission hybrid to be sure but still just a hybrid.

 

But FCEVs still have batteries, and while their drivetrain is pure electric, they don't have the refueling flexibility of a plug.

Which makes no sense. An ICE produces motive force. The fuel cell makes electricity. It has an anode and cathode, and is just a battery but different. In order to electricity out of an ICE, it needs to be hooked up to a generator; an electric motor used backwards.

The only ones calling a FCEV a hybrid is Toyota, and it is a pure marketing move. They hope some of the Prius success rubs off on their FCEVs.

Back to the gen4 Prius. With the latest photos, I still like the exterior. It is sharp looking with a faux trunk lid, so I think it will appeal to more people. Plus, the flying bridge appears to be gone. I just won't be considering one until Toyota builds one of the Prius family in North America.

 

Whew!...it's not as bad as I thought. It's still not beautiful and I still would like that cut-out eliminated, but I can live with this car specially if it hits the rumoured 61mpg....can someone please sell colour matching metal cladding on that cut out area?

Sounds pretty similar to me.

 

Yeah..."hybrid" just means two or more sources. Those sources could be anything, and the energy produced could be converted to mechanical energy in any way.

Hydrogen is the fuel of the future. No carbon footprint, producing water and air so it has to be better than any carbon based fuel.

The fuel stack takes hydrogen and creates electricity. That can drive a motor or be stored in a battery.

BMW, Mercedes-Benz and even Chevrolet have been exploring the possibility of a hydrogen car.

Now back to the Gen Four Prius, I,too see the hybrid as a bridge to the future FCEV. There is a lot of good to be said for the gas/electric hybrid. No range anxiety, proven technology and you can buy it for less than $30k.

I was tired of supporting the oil companies. With four cars in the family, the Prius couldn't have come along at a better time. Now my wife and I are looking for (maybe) the last car we may ever purchase. Gen 4 looks like it will be a solution to my problem.

I want to keep my Gen2 until I go to the nursing home. That's going to be a few years from now. But, Prius Owners, this may be the face of Gen 4 for a few years. Why not?

Hydrogen needs to have a better system to get it to market. There is no place close to get a full tank of hydrogen, to my knowledge, in Indiana short of going to a welders supply place. They deal in all kinds of gases and liquids.

No, as long as I can afford it, I will have some sort of hybrid electric vehicle. Just my opinion, people. Who knows what the future may bring? Now Kanye says he's going to run for President in 2020. I am not kidding.
