Don't know if it has been mentioned before, but I thought I would share my experience with getting new tires yesterday at 29.5k miles. I went to the dealership because my tire pressure light was on. They discovered I had a nail in the sidewall of my rear driver-side tire. Being that's unrepairable, they let me know they could replace it but they didn't have the stock tire at Toyota service. They said if they did that it would be about $160 installed. So they put a little more air in the tire, and I went home to read Prius chat about what kind of tire/s I should get. The next morning I went to discount tire, still unsure if I would just replace the one tire, perhaps the back two, or all four. I wanted to get the energy savers, but they didn't have them. Discount Tire told me I only had 3/32nd on all four tires, which I was surprised at only 29.5k miles on the car. I asked them if I got some sort of rebate for the little bit of life I had left in the tires, if I opted to get all four. The guy didn't seem to think so, but he called Goodyear to check. My stock tires were the Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max. Sure enough, because of the low mileage and high wear on the tires, Goodyear gave me $47 back per tire. I ended up opting for the only recommended tires they had in stock - the Michelin Premier A/S, and replaced all four. Thought maybe you all should know, if you have low mileage and high wear on your stock tires, ask for a rebate. It looks like the rebate on the Goodyear Assurances are 65k miles.
Good to know. Years back I did similar on with a set of Michelins: they were at the wear bars at 60,000 km's, and the treadlife warranty was 120,000 km. Tire store got in touch with them, and I got a replacement set (of the same) for half price.
My original OEM tires (Yokohama AVID S33s) needed replacement at approx. 44,500 miles, and I also went with the Michelin Premier A/S as well. They had the $100 rebate during a memorial day sale at Discount Tires. So far, I'm very happy with the tires. I've noticed a small decrease in fuel economy (about 1-2 miles per gallon). I've driven about 6000 miles on the tires and so far I like them a lot. I just did a 1200 mile road trip and got 51.7 miles per gallon in all kinds of driving conditions. I've read and heard so many good things about these tires, so hopefully they will hold up for a long time.
My OEM EP20 lasted 36k I just replaced with EP422plus 7k mile tire install Costoc rebate $70 brough it out the door to $408
My OEM Yokohama's were below 4/32 at my 25k service. I drove them to 34k out of spite for the situation, but they started hydroplaning in anything worse than a light rain and there was no way I was taking any chance at driving those things in the winter. Actually last winter the car was darn near undrivable in the snow, and that was starting at less than 18k. Ended up getting Goodyear ComforTreds... we'll see in the coming weeks if it negatively affects my efficiency. As you can see by my fuelly, I don't normally end up in the high range of expected mpg's anyhow (Winter weather crushes my numbers). Went with the tires I went with because I wanted to be in Goodyear Assurance line due to having a $20 rebate per tire (in addition and separate from any other rebate, got another $60 off in the shop) due to knowing someone who works at a local factory. Total after rebates is going to be $450 including a free NYS inspection and they got me for the warranty ($32 total). For whatever reason both shops I went to didn't recommend the FuelMax tires.
