I am new here and hoping that you can tell me what I should do about this. We had 3 fobs/keys for our new-to-us 2006 Prius 4. It was stolen from our driveway, and I think that was because I must have left a fob/key in it. Now we still have the other two fobs/keys. Do we need to get the whole thing rekeyed/computered or is there a way to only delete the missing fob? I guess they would still have the mechanical key, so we should get new keys as well? We've only had hte car a few months, so i still don't really understand how it all works. I saw a thread about this in the Gen III forum, but I don't know if things are different for older Priuses? thanks!
It should be possible to delete the missing fob. I suggest you visit your local Toyota dealer, with the two remaining fobs in hand, so that the dealer tech can do that work for you.
Thanks, I am going to call the dealer this morning, but there is only one around here so there isn't anyone else to ask. I wanted to make sure that I don't end up doing way more or paying way more than needed. My father-in-law was told that I need to have all new fobs made when he called the dealer near him and asked what needed to be done. Just deleting the one sounds much less expensive.
Also note, they key fob holds the real key too, pulls out the side of the fob. So you would be missing a real key as well. So they could still open door, but not be able to start your car! That is if dealer takes the fob out of the system
I also park my new (to me) 06 Prius in the driveway, while my Jaguar XJ is garaged inside. I always make sure to remove the key fob when exiting the car. Should I still worry about the Prius being stolen? I hear today's hi-tech thieves use a 'key fob amplifier' to unlock and steal cars. I think I am going to get 'The Club" for my peace of mind.
Yes but I would rather it not be stolen to begin with, than having to deal with insurance claims (BTW- Geico has the best rates but the WORST customer service).
I suppose it depends upon the crime rate in your locale, but in general I would not expect a 9 year old Prius to be high on the list of cars to be stolen.
Then be sure to watch the youtube videos where people remove the club with about as much resistance as swatting a mosquito.
Simple solution and not expensive. 1- Have computer reset and the keys you currently have added back to vehicle(this will delete all missing fobs) 2- Order a new lock or get used on ebay, comes with two keys. 3- take out your lock and take color cover off. 4- place new lock(with old color cover) in and place new keys onto your smart fobs. Get old lock and the two keys you have and place it back on ebay. You can also just swap locks with another gen2 prius not near your house.
I don't know about the Prius specifically, but some older but reliable cars are stolen often. It's not because the car itself is highly desirable to drive, but because there are lots of that model still on the road and there is a high demand for used parts as people try to repair them inexpensively. So the cars are stolen and stripped and sold as parts.
It is my understanding that Prius in general is the least stolen car in America. Different reasons have been given such as many of the parts being specific only to Prius ( as opposed to being shared with other models), low demand for such parts, and low demand in general for the Prius among thieves.
