HOW TO DIY: JDM Folding Mirrors with Signals

    Here is the original 2012+ harness that they sent me. You can see that it is missing the outside wires, which are for illumination for the lighted switches.
    Also, notice the Ground and ACC are reversed from the previous post! If you get this harness, don't use it!

    Mine they sent the black harness. Yours look different.

    Thank you. That what I thought as well. Just by checking the wiring diagram it tells me that sure it is.
    If time permits then this project will be done by the end of this week. I will give you an updates soon.

    Thanks man thewiring wasn't that bad. I think the most challenging part was looking fir that blue wire on the A pillar.

    Folks,

    I had some problems after my original JDM folding mirror + turn signal + puddle light install - possibly caused by a re-used kit purchased online.

    I recently bit the bullet and ordered a new MitAccessories control relay and wiring kit. I did not pop for a new mirror switch, having the original OEM 2012 switch and a (I think) 2014 power-folding-button, non-lit mirror switch from other Toyotas.

    I finally got around to installing it today.

    The relay is the new black plastic one like in the pix on the previous page.

    Problem: the wiring kit is different - the five plug-to-plug wires are all light green. The other, plug-to-relay wires are multicolored.

    The plug to the OEM harness doesn't fit the OEM harness - although the plug to the non-lighted Toyota power button mirror switch (I used a folding power mirror switch from other Toyotas, as per the original post in this thread) does fit that switch.

    No sweat, I thought: I just re-used the spade t-taps from my 2014 install. Maybe I am being foolish here...

    However, there are now three wires coming from the folding controller - green, blue and red. The original (used) kit had two - a red wire and a white wire. Who amongst us out there can advice where to connect what?

    Hi! I had 3 wires as well the red is the 12v. The other 2 are for your trigger lock and unlock wire.

    The trigger unlock is optional but I wired mine to make the complete the install

    The red wire is for a constant +12v.

    The blue wire goes to the lock

    The green wire goes to the unlock.

    OK, looks like I likely overthought the whole thing... looks easy by the attached pix from page #12... except that the harness I got has different-color wires. Hmmm...

    There's still that pesky fitting on this new harness which doesn't mate with the OEM Prius switch fitting... perhaps I got a different harness by mistake.

    I'll try again tomorrow when the light of day makes me think better.

    UPDATE - yesterday, fellow PriusChat member 69ShovlHed and I spent hours on a beautiful Saturday trouble-shooting my 2014 JDM Full Monty power folding / puddle light / parking light / turn signal mirror install.

    69ShovlHed has a really cool multimeter and also the professional skills to use it which I lacked.

    Trouble: after several months of install, I had been getting intermittent faults throughout the modded system. I at first blamed it on possibly faulty used components (power folding module & harness bought used). Finally, after two completely drained-battery events, Toyota pretty much disconnected everything that had been modded and I was left with lotsa theories.

    My mod path: the GoldPaniogarden / machanon DIY install blog with some pointers and motivation from early in this thread.

    69ShovlHed meticulously let the way in multimeter-testing every single T_Tap connection, and to my increasing surprise found about 40+% of the multiple new connections per the GoldPaniogarden instructions... faulty or intermittently faulty. This was especially evident when, connection by connection, we wiggled the assembled kit while continuity-testing it between literally every segment.

    When we had tightened every intermittent or faulty connection, every feature was working again. Then we assembled the driver's side left knee panel, and a lot of the faults reappeared.

    After driving the car a bit, all the faults again went away - now everything is working fine. There is no drain on the battery above about 3 mAmps when the car is locked and asleep.

    Our conclusion: because of the large amount of T-taps needed to do this multi-function mirror mod on the 2012+ Gen IIIs, it is actually better to hard-wire as many connections as possible throughout this mod and eliminate the suggested GoldPaniogarden T-tap connection method for better long-term function. In a moving car with tight behind-panel spaces, lotsa connected patch wires rubbing against each other and ever-present road vibrations, multiple T-taps even when carefully assembled can get loose and cause all kinds of problems, and this mod (per Goldpaniogarden) asks for 20+ T-tap connections.

    I note that the OP here (MasterModder SFV ;-) ) hard-wired a lot of his connections for this mod. I'll convert my T-taps to hard-wires as well (just not today haha).

    Here's a priuschat shoutout to 69ShovlHed for his deep electrical troubleshooting knowledge and his kind decision to help out to the very end!
