Plugin Supply kit in Australia

    Greetings from Perth, am about to convert a Gen 2 2007 Prius to PIS plug in, doing it the legal way. Transport WA approved. So consultant engineer here wants to know the Toyota specified maximum axle mass for front and rear axles for the Prius, as well as maximum Gross vehicle mass. Have the latter but Toyota unable to help with axle loads- any ideas, and general advice? Thanks

    In my 2004 (European model, left hand drive, and disc brakes on the back) It says 1050kg front axle, 1020kg back axle, and 1725kg gross vehicle mass.

    Just a quick report that my Plug-In Supply 10kWh plug-in conversion is now completed and working extremely well.
    It is winter here and the heater and demister are on for most of the time which causes the engine to run very often.

    I am happy to report that even with the heater running, we are using an average of only 2.8L / 100km of petrol. (101mpg (imp))
    In fact our petrol gauge is just under half and we have driven over 1000km so far, on this tank.
    I am predicting that this will reduce to around 2.2L / 100km (about 130mpg (imp)) by summer time (i will report back then).

    This driving includes lots of hill climbing and high speed driving (up to 100Km/h)

    The Plug-In Supply system uses 32Ah from the 40Ah battery before the system switches off.
    This leaves 20% SOC in the additional pack, which is exactly what I wanted, so no additional circuitry is required to achieve this outcome.
    This is being monitored by a JLD 404 meter which I highly recommend. (Volts, Amps [Charge and discharge], Ampere Hours [Charge and discharge], and Time). I use a 12V / 12V DC Isolator with this.

    I continue to update my "Blog" on my website (EVPlus - Electric Vehicles & Hybrids), but this is a little snippet which is not there yet.

    Hi Eric,
    Good to hear your system is working well. I have been using forced EV for years and if my planned trip is below my EV range of 60km I do the whole trip in forced EV mode only. For monitoring I prefer to use the EV Display - CleanPowerAuto LLC for US$100 using Bluetooth devices and my own LCD screen using a Duinomite Mega.

    Hi John,

    I forgot to mention that I too have "Forced EV" mode. I don't use it a lot because of the limited acceleration. I think the range of that is around 75km (from my testing).

    Hi Eric,
    There is a limit to the amount of torque at higher speeds in Forced EV mode. But where I live in Sydney the terrain is relatively flat. I would avoid using forced EV mode in hilly areas. The EV range will vary on factors like speed and overall gradient. I could increase the range greatly if I limited the speed to 40km/h and used a overall down hill gradient for the whole trip. Maybe even riding behind a truck to reduce air resistance.

    Do you have any tips or pictures of your JLD 404 meter installation / connection?
    I have the Plug-In-Supply kit on my Gen III and am looking for an easier way to monitor my batteries.

    I purchased my JLD404 from here:

    Programmable Digital AH meter (red led). Ideal for battery monitoring

    I used an isolated 3Watt, 12V to 12V dc-dc converter to power this meter.

    Instructions for wiring come with the device or from EVTV.ME (this document from Jack has some confusing errors in it.)

    I also purchased the 75mV shunt from lightobject.com at the same time. This is inserted in the Negative lead from the main pack.

    This meter is great - it even remembers the V, Ah and Time values while the 12V power is disconnected.

    I power it from the 12V Fan output on the Plug-in Supply Rear Controller, which is on in "Ready" and "On Charge" (via the 12V-12v Isolator)

    Awesome, thank you for all the information.
    I definitely don't like being in the dark about the battery level. This will help me know the plug it in!
    Do the instruction that come with the device have any errors? If so, what should I look out for?

    Hi Kaze,
    The instructions that come with the JLD404 are correct. When Jack tried to simplify it, he made quite a few errors in the area of the relay output description. I haven't needed to use the relays now, so it doesn't matter anyway.
